Leaked code indicates that xAI is working on a sophisticated file editor for Grok with spreadsheet capabilities, highlighting its effort to rival OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft by integrating AI copilots into productivity software.
“You can chat with Grok and get help while editing files!” wrote reverse engineer Nima Owji, who uncovered the leak.

xAI Hints at Its Vision with Grok Studio and Workspaces
While xAI hasn’t clearly outlined its vision for interactive, multimodal AI workspaces, a series of recent announcements offers clues. In April 2025, the company introduced Grok Studio—a split-screen environment where users can co-create documents, code, reports, and browser games with Grok. It also unveiled Workspaces, a feature that organizes files and conversations in one place.
Though OpenAI and Microsoft offer comparable tools, Google’s Gemini Workspace for Sheets, Docs, and Gmail appears closest to what xAI is reportedly developing. Gemini allows users to edit documents and spreadsheets while chatting with the AI, though it’s limited to Google’s ecosystem.
Uncertainty Remains Around xAI’s Broader Productivity Plans
It remains unclear what file types xAI’s editor will support beyond spreadsheets or whether the company aims to build a full productivity suite to rival Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
If Nima Owji’s leak is accurate, the new editor could mark a significant step toward Elon Musk’s broader goal of transforming X into an all-in-one platform encompassing documents, messaging, payments, and social features.
