
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have created an experimental chewing gum that can cut viral levels in saliva by over 95%, targeting viruses like influenza, herpes, and SARS-CoV-2.
Plant-Based Molecular Decoys That Trap Viruses in the Mouth
The gum includes recombinant proteins—such as plant-based ACE2 and FRIL from lablab beans—that attach to viruses in the mouth, acting as “molecular decoys” to block them from entering human cells.
Lab tests showed that just 40 mg of the compound can greatly lower viral levels in saliva, potentially reducing spread through talking, coughing, or sneezing.
Although still experimental and not a substitute for vaccines or other preventive measures, this approach could serve as a complementary strategy in the future.
