The future of healthcare could be closer than ever, thanks to a smart patch designed to resemble the texture of human skin. Powered by artificial intelligence, the device can analyze health data directly on the body within milliseconds, without requiring Wi-Fi or an internet connection.

Real-Time Health Monitoring Without the Cloud

Unlike smartwatches, which often collect information and send it to remote servers for processing, this smart patch performs data analysis in real time. This could be especially important during medical emergencies such as ventricular fibrillation, where even a short delay in detecting a dangerous condition can have serious consequences. By processing information instantly, the patch could provide much faster health monitoring.

The technology is possible because of advances in producing organic electrochemical transistors on flexible surfaces. These advances allow engineers to integrate powerful computing capabilities into a lightweight patch that sits directly on the skin.

Sihong Wang of the University of Chicago says the researchers aim to make wearable and implantable medical devices more intelligent. Their long-term vision is to create devices capable of providing people with instant, personalized health assistance wherever they are.

The breakthrough lies in a flexible neuromorphic computing circuit—a large network of transistors designed to imitate the way the human brain processes information and analyzes health data. Researchers had previously demonstrated similar technology on a much smaller scale, but they have now developed it at a practical and potentially transformative size.

At the heart of the system are organic electrochemical transistors, or “neuro-transistors.” Unlike conventional computer chips, these devices process information using both electrical currents and ions. They also have built-in memory, allowing them to retain information reliably—similar to how synapses in the brain learn and become stronger over time.

However, producing these devices presented significant manufacturing challenges. Heat and chemical solvents could easily damage the flexible material, while the electrolyte gel layer could cause unwanted short circuits. Overcoming these problems required a major engineering breakthrough.

New Polymer Gel Unlocks Next-Generation Wearable Computing

The solution was a new polymer gel that can be hardened using ultraviolet light. This innovation enabled researchers to manufacture up to 10,000 organic electrochemical transistors per square centimeter, delivering sufficient computing capacity for next-generation wearable technologies.

In other words, the future of intelligent health monitoring could be built literally at the surface of our skin.
