According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is creating a chip for smart glasses that is based on the one used in the Apple Watch. The company’s silicon team has reportedly removed certain components from the Watch chip to enhance its power efficiency.

Apple’s Progress on Smart Glasses and Shift Away from Mac-Connected AR

Additionally, the team has been working on enabling the chip to manage multiple cameras required for the glasses to operate. Gurman previously mentioned that Apple has paused plans for Mac-connected augmented reality glasses, but still intends to release standalone AR glasses in the future. However, these glasses will not be true AR devices, and will instead compete more directly with Meta’s Ray-Bans.

Apple is adopting a more careful and gradual approach to developing its standalone glasses, meaning their release could be a while away. According to Gurman, Apple plans to begin mass production of the chips for the glasses around 2027, suggesting that development will take at least two more years. Given this timeline, Meta is likely to beat Apple to the market with its first true augmented reality glasses, as the company is already working on them and aiming for a 2027 launch.

Features to Rival Meta’s Ray-Bans

To compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban spectacles, Apple’s device is expected to feature capabilities like photo and video capture, built-in speakers or earphones, and voice command functionality. The glasses will likely use cameras to scan the environment and provide assistance through artificial intelligence.

While the product will resemble Meta’s Ray-Bans, Bloomberg reports that Apple is still refining its specific approach to the device. Apple is reportedly developing chips for a range of devices, including more powerful Macs and AI servers, in addition to the chip for the smart glasses.
