Unlike cats, which often wake and move around at night, dogs usually remain in bed. “This indicates that cats cause more nighttime disruptions. We also observed that dog owners maintained more regular sleep and wake schedules compared to cat owners,” Hoffman told Healthline.

    Dogs also outperformed human partners as sleeping companions. Hoffman noted, “Couples often have mismatched bedtimes and wake-up times, which can easily disturb sleep. Our study found that dogs adjust to their owners’ schedules more readily than human partners do.”

    Women Feel Safer Sleeping Beside Dogs Than Cats

    Lastly, women who slept alongside their dogs said they felt safer and more at ease. This sense of security comes from dogs’ tendency to alert their owners to intruders or emergencies—a role cats are far less likely to fulfill, which meant they didn’t offer participants the same reassurance.

    Christy Hoffman states that further research is needed, but the study was valuable for examining minor disturbances that disrupt sleep and are often overlooked. Regarding germs, she notes there is no cause for concern as long as the pet is well cared for and vaccinated. “However, if your immune system is compromised, it’s best to avoid sleeping with your pet,” the researcher concluded.

    Researchers utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the functional connectivity—how different brain regions interact—of participants diagnosed with internet addiction, both during rest and while performing tasks.

    The study revealed widespread effects of internet addiction on various neural networks in the adolescent brain. There was observed variation in activity levels within the default mode network, which is active during resting periods. Additionally, there was an overall decrease in functional connectivity within the executive control network, responsible for active cognition.

    These changes are associated with the development of addictive behaviors and tendencies in adolescents, affecting intellectual abilities, physical coordination, mental health, and overall development.

    Lead author Max Chang, an MSc student at UCL’s Great Ormond Street Institute for Child Health, commented: “Adolescence is a critical stage of development characterized by significant biological, cognitive, and personality changes. Consequently, the adolescent brain is particularly susceptible to urges related to internet addiction, such as compulsive internet use, cravings for mouse or keyboard interaction, and media consumption.”

    Behavioral and Developmental Consequences of Internet Addiction

    Our study findings indicate that these outcomes could result in adverse behavioral and developmental consequences that may affect adolescents’ lives. For instance, they might encounter challenges in maintaining relationships and participating in social activities, engage in deceptive behavior regarding online activities, and experience irregular eating patterns and disrupted sleep.”

    With smartphones and laptops becoming increasingly accessible, internet addiction is becoming a prevalent issue worldwide. Previous studies have highlighted that individuals in the UK spend more than 24 hours online per week, with over half of respondents self-reporting internet addiction.

    Meanwhile, Ofcom reported that among the 50 million internet users in the UK, more than 60% acknowledged negative impacts from their internet usage, such as tardiness or neglecting responsibilities.

    Irene Lee’s Perspective on Internet Usage

    Irene Lee, senior author from UCL’s Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, remarked, “While the internet offers clear advantages, when its use begins to disrupt daily life, it becomes problematic.”

    We recommend that young people establish sensible limits on their daily internet use and recognize the psychological and social consequences of excessive online time,” she added.

    Mr. Chang further stated, “We anticipate our findings will illustrate how internet addiction modifies the interplay among brain networks during adolescence, aiding healthcare providers in better screening and treating the onset of internet addiction.”

    Clinicians could potentially prescribe targeted treatments focusing on specific brain regions or recommend therapies like psychotherapy or family counseling tailored to address key symptoms of internet addiction.”

    Importance of Parental Education on Internet Addiction

    Crucially, educating parents about internet addiction could serve as another avenue for prevention from a public health perspective. Parents informed about early signs and onset of internet addiction can more effectively manage screen time, impulsivity, and mitigate risk factors associated with internet addiction.”

    Limitations of the study include the current constraints in utilizing fMRI scans to explore internet addiction, with studies predominantly involving small samples of adolescents from Asian countries. Future research should seek to compare findings from Western samples to enhance understanding and inform therapeutic interventions.

    To date, there has been limited exploration into social media communication compared to traditional offline channels. In a recent study, Boleslaw Szymanski, Ph.D., and his team discovered that while the dynamics are akin, they yield distinct outcomes, contributing to the proliferation of polarized perspectives.

    Szymanski, the Claire & Roland Schmitt Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Network Science and Technology Center (NeST) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, collaborated with postdoctoral research associate James Flamino and graduate student Mohammed Shahid Modi at Rensselaer for this research.

    In-depth Analysis of Social Media Posts

    The team scrutinized approximately 183 million posts on Parler, a social media platform catering to right-leaning users seeking an alternative to Twitter, and 702 million Twitter posts. Both datasets covered posts from September to December 2020.

    On both platforms, users tended to gravitate towards popular opinions (a phenomenon known as homophily). Moreover, when confronted with dissenting views, users often abandoned the platforms altogether.

    In our earlier research, we examined the political perspectives of students on university campuses,” remarked Szymanski. “We found that student groups dominated by majority opinion holders exhibited greater stability and longevity. Similarly, in our recent study, we observed that Parler users aligned with the majority opinion tended to have more enduring membership and remained active on the platform for longer durations. These users typically represented the extreme right.”

    Content with liberal leanings represented a negligible portion of the overall content. However, Twitter users initially displayed a diverse range of political affiliations before gravitating towards either end of the political spectrum. The common trend observed was that users tended to align with like-minded groups or disengage entirely.”

    High Dropout Rates on Social Media Platforms

    The dropout rates on social media platforms, which carry lower social costs compared to universities, are significantly higher—approximately 80 to 100 times—highlighting the ease with which individuals can disengage from these platforms without risking long-term relationships.

    This comparison holds significance in understanding trends in public opinion, shifts in perspectives, and the impact of social media on political discourse. Moreover, the absence of offline communication nuances complicates the assessment of online content authenticity.

    It is crucial not only to mitigate the shortcomings of social media but also to amplify its advantages,” emphasized Szymanski. “While social media facilitates the democratization of information, the propensity of users to seek out echo chambers exacerbates social divisions.”

    Specifically, the study revealed that Twitter users segregated into two large groups, one favoring liberal news and the other conservative news. Conversely, Parler users predominantly belonged to a single, conservative-biased group.

    Propensity for Fake News Engagement among Parler Users

    Parler users were also more inclined to engage with or gravitate towards fake news, indicating a propensity to persist along the same path if initially exposed to misinformation.

    Furthermore, Parler users with dissenting viewpoints were more susceptible to adopting and propagating fake news themselves, indicative of an echo chamber effect. Conversely, the fake news cohort on Twitter failed to attract a significant user base.

    As we anticipate another election cycle, it is imperative to consider the disruptive potential of unverified and biased news, especially in light of the impending surge in generative AI-generated ‘deep fake’ audio and video content, which reinforces existing biases,” noted Curt Breneman, Ph.D., Dean of Rensselaer’s School of Science. “Dr. Szymanski’s research provides valuable insights into this critical issue, and I hope his findings are taken into account by both social media users and regulators.”
