Bio Tires Drive a Performance Icon Toward a Sustainable Future

Pirelli’s high-performance P-Zero family welcomes cleaner design

Pirelli has unveiled its first mass-produced tires composed of more than 70% bio-based and recycled content. Developed specifically for Jaguar Land Rover, the new P Zero tire line incorporates Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified natural rubber, signaling a major step toward greener performance products.

Initial Launch Targets Range Rover Models

These eco-conscious P Zero tires will debut on 22-inch wheels for Range Rover models, with plans to expand availability to the broader market. Each tire features FSC certification and clear labeling that reflects the proportion of sustainable and recycled components used in its construction.

Among the materials integrated into the tires are recycled steel, silica sourced from rice husk waste, circular carbon black from used tires, bio-circular polymers derived from cooking and pyrolysis oils, and plant-based bio-resins serving as binders. All materials have been independently verified by Bureau Veritas for sustainability claims.

The recycled steel, formed from melted-down scrap metal, is used to reinforce the tire’s internal belt plies. The foundation of the compound includes certified renewable natural rubber, which acts as a base for the additional sustainable components.

Bio-Based Additives Enhance Performance and Sustainability

Silica made from rice husk waste—a byproduct of rice processing—improves traction and wear resistance. The carbon black, recovered from end-of-life tires, contributes to strength and durability.Manufacturers replace traditional petroleum-based inputs with oils derived from used cooking oil or pyrolysis processes and use plant-based plasticizers to produce the bio-resins that bind the tire’s structure together.
