In December 2025, OpenAI will launch a new ChatGPT feature that lets verified adults create erotic content and participate in romantic or sexual chats. While AI platforms such as Replika and Grok already offer similar experiences, OpenAI’s move represents a major shift in the landscape.

The company describes this move as treating adults like adults,” but it’s ultimately a business tactic to boost user engagement and revenue.

OpenAI spent over $2.5 billion (£1.8 billion) in cash during the first half of 2024, and erotic chat offers exactly what investors want most—more user interaction. Elon Musk’s Grok, for instance, charges £30 a month for access to its erotic companion features.

OpenAI’s Age Verification and Moderation Measures: Promise vs. Reality

Like other tech firms, OpenAI claims it will enforce age verification and moderation filters to keep erotic content restricted to adults. In theory, only verified users will gain access.

In practice, these systems are easily bypassed. Teenagers frequently dodge age checks using borrowed IDs, altered selfies, deepfakes, or photos of older individuals. Others rely on disposable accounts or VPNs to slip past detection.

Other platforms highlight the potential pitfalls. Grok lets users design “erotic companion avatars,” including a sexualized anime character named Ani. A recent Business Insider investigation revealed that chats with Ani frequently turned explicit with very little encouragement.

Moderators at the company also reported encountering AI-generated sexual abuse while overseeing Grok’s flirtatious avatar, which can “strip on command” and toggle between “sexy” and “unhinged” modes.

Emotional Closeness and Teenage Vulnerability

Users have already found methods to get around the ethical filters that typically prevent chatbots from creating explicit or harmful content.

OpenAI’s upcoming erotic mode will include a dedicated ethical framework designed to block illegal or abusive material. However, those protections will likely be just as susceptible to jailbreaks as existing systems. Once explicit text is produced, it can quickly spread online, outside the company’s ability to contain it.

Unclear Boundaries

Erotic AI also highlights significant regulatory gaps. In the UK, written erotica is legal and doesn’t require age verification, unlike pornographic images or videos. This loophole allows content prohibited on adult sites to still be produced as text by chatbots.

Laws differ worldwide. Some nations, like China and the Gulf states, prohibit erotic content entirely, while others have weak or uneven enforcement. The upcoming EU AI Act might label sexual companion bots as “high risk,” but its enforcement is still far from being realized.

At the same time, companies can adjust their “ethical alignments” whenever they choose, so content banned today might be allowed tomorrow.

Despite claims of neutrality, erotic AI is far from unbiased. Many platforms design their companions to be female-coded, submissive, and constantly available. This creates a digital space that normalizes misogyny and distorts ideas about consent, particularly affecting boys and young men.

How Erotic AI Exacerbates Online Harm Against Women and Girls

Women and girls already suffer most from online sexual harm, including non-consensual deepfakes and image-based abuse—harms that erotic AI could make quicker, easier, and cheaper to create.

These concerns are largely missing from mainstream AI policy discussions. Erotic AI is being developed in ways that cater primarily to male fantasies while putting women and girls at risk. It’s reinforcing outdated and harmful views about women among a new generation of young men.

The introduction of erotic AI companions marks a notable shift from OpenAI’s previous efforts to keep harmful content away from ChatGPT users. The broader landscape of erotic AI is characterized by weak age restrictions, emotional vulnerability, legal loopholes, and gender-based harms. Will ChatGPT be any different?

These systems are likely to be jailbroken and accessed by unintended audiences, including minors. They will probably generate content that challenges or violates legal limits.

Before erotic chatbots become yet another unregulated space online, urgent action is needed from governments, educators, and technologists. Without regulation, erotic AI risks intensifying existing online harms, with women, girls, and other vulnerable groups bearing the consequences.
