OpenAI reported a partial outage on Tuesday morning that affected access to ChatGPT, Sora, and the API, according to the company’s status page.

The issue began late Monday night, and although OpenAI started investigating at that time, the disruption continued into Tuesday morning. By around 5:30 a.m. PT, the company had identified the cause and began working on a fix.

West Coast Users May Face Morning Access Issues as Recovery Continues

Despite these efforts, OpenAI noted around 8 a.m. PT that it could take “a few more hours” for full service to be restored—meaning users on the U.S. West Coast may not be able to access ChatGPT during their morning hours.

Although ChatGPT outages are usually resolved within a few hours, Tuesday’s partial outage has been unusually prolonged. OpenAI noted that users might encounter “increased errors and latency” while using the service.

When TechCrunch attempted to access GPT-4o in ChatGPT on Tuesday morning, the chatbot returned an error message stating, “Too many concurrent requests.

Tuesday’s partial outage coincides with a wave of major announcements from OpenAI. During Apple’s WWDC event on Monday, the tech giant revealed plans for deeper integration with OpenAI’s models. That same day, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that the company has reached $10 billion in annualized recurring revenue. Additionally, on Tuesday morning, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced an 80% price reduction for developers using the company’s o3 AI reasoning models through its API.

OpenAI has previously faced challenges in scaling its AI model usage to serve hundreds of millions of users—an essential step for achieving its long-term goals. Altman has even remarked that the company’s “GPUs are melting” under the strain of ChatGPT demand, suggesting that OpenAI’s computing infrastructure is currently under heavy pressure. The appetite for OpenAI’s models appears to be growing steadily.
