Average ocean temperatures reached a record 21.10°C (69.98°F) on August 22, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
While that temperature is far below that of a warm bath, it marks the highest global ocean temperature recorded since C3S began collecting data in 1979.
Climate Warming Continues to Drive Ocean Temperatures Higher
Climate scientist Zachary Labe of Climate Central says the record is not unexpected, as it aligns with decades of research showing that the planet’s warming climate is driving ocean temperatures higher. He warns that without reducing fossil fuel use, this warming trend will continue.
The previous record was 21.09°C (69.96°F), recorded in March 2024, according to C3S.

The new record also comes as the world enters an exceptionally strong El Niño period. This natural climate cycle brings unusually warm Pacific Ocean waters, which can influence weather patterns around the globe.
“This latest record is yet another strong indication that the world’s oceans are facing increasing pressure,” said Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), in the same statement.
Rising Ocean Temperatures Threaten Global Security
Labe explains that rising ocean temperatures can accelerate sea-level rise, alter weather patterns and threaten marine ecosystems, including coral reefs. “These changes can have consequences across almost every area of society, from the economy and coastal infrastructure to global security,” he says.
However, Labe warns that the record may not remain in place for long. “This is unlikely to be the last time we report a record like this, and sadly, we may surpass it again within the coming months,” he says.
