Google is set to introduce an updated version of the App Pairs feature in Android 14, allowing users to save specific split-screen app combinations on their phones. App Pair is a multitasking tool that enables users to open and interact with two applications side-by-side. Previously, users had to repeat the pairing process every time they closed the apps, and Pixel hardware did not support saving app pairs. However, a recent leak discovered by tech journalist Mishaal Rahman suggests that a new “Save app pair” option will be available in the context menu of split-screened apps. Although the feature is not currently functional, Rahman expects it to work properly in the future.

It remains uncertain whether this feature will be available upon the launch of Android 14. While the split-screen saving function exists on Android, it has not been included in the base version of Android OS or Pixel devices. Third-party manufacturers like Samsung have already incorporated this functionality into their devices, with the ability to save app pairings being available on Galaxy phones since 2017. Pixel devices have been lagging behind in this regard.

Boosted multitasking

Continuing with Google’s efforts to catch up, a recent revelation by industry leaker Nail Sadykov unveiled another multitasking feature in the latest Android 14 beta. The new feature allows users to make use of system navigation while performing drag-and-drop actions. This means that users can easily take an image from one app, open another app, and seamlessly drop the image into it. The feature also extends to text manipulation. Users can now highlight a string of words and effortlessly move it to another location, eliminating the need for cumbersome copying and pasting.

Similar to the discoveries made by Rahman, the enhanced drag-and-drop functionality is already present in other smartphones, ranging from iOS to Oppo devices. However, Google has been lagging behind in implementing these features. It is hoped that these quality-of-life updates will be included in the Pixel 8. Although they may not be the most groundbreaking additions, these small improvements can accumulate and ultimately transform an average device into something exceptional.

Regarding the Pixel 8, a recent leak suggests that the Pro model could potentially incorporate a thermometer. This additional feature is said to be located alongside the camera lenses on the back of the device. The purpose behind Google’s decision to include a thermometer in the Pixel remains uncertain, as it appears to be a somewhat unexpected addition.
