Analyzing the Unique Appeal of HX Outdoors’ 4-Ounce Retractable Tool for EDC Collectors
HX Outdoors prioritizes the cool factor over practicality with its 4-ounce (116-gram) Retractable tool, but they have managed to craft something unique for EDC collectors, even though it may not be the most functional multitool for those seeking maximum utility.
The Retractable EDC Tool
The Retractable EDC Tool, or REDC, initially appears as a straightforward 5.3-inch (13.5-cm) aluminum handle equipped with a glass breaker at the bottom. However, when you press the thumb button, a 3.7-inch (9.3-cm) blade-like 420J2 stainless steel component swiftly emerges. This implement includes a slotted screwdriver/pry bar tip and a series of hex wrenches cut into its surface, along with a bottle opener a bit further down.
Apart from the screwdriver and possibly the bottle opener (although many of us already have those on various other tools, keychains, and gear we own), none of the REDC’s tools would make it to our personal list of essential EDC functions in a multitool. Nonetheless, we understand that when purchasing a single-implement switch-tool like this, the primary appeal lies in the impressive deployment, perfect for showcasing at parties and tailgates.
A Look at Switchblade Functionality in Multitool Designs
HX Outdoors is not the first company to explore the incorporation of switchblade functionality into multitool designs. Previously, the Toughbuilt Scraper Utility Knife was introduced a couple of years ago, which could be considered more of a “dual tool” than a multitool. Additionally, the SOG SwitchPlier and SwitchPlier 2.0, the latter launched in 2015, offered more comprehensive tool sets.
The SwitchPlier 2.0, in particular, featured a single-button auto-deploy plier alongside the usual concealed tools within the handle, such as a straight/serrated-edge blade, Phillips and slotted drivers, a file, can and bottle openers, and more. This version presented a more compelling and tool-loaded approach to the switch-tool concept.
Exploring the HX REDC as a Pocket Tool with Switchblade Action in 2023
Undoubtedly, the SOG seems like the more preferable choice, but unfortunately, it is no longer accessible. If you drawn to the concept of a pocket tool with switchblade action, the HX REDC appears to be the current option in 2023.
However, its viability is still uncertain as HX is currently seeking support through a Kickstarter campaign, offering a $49 super early bird pledge point.
