IPhone 13 gets Satellite Emergency Feature with iOS 18.5

On Monday, Apple launched iOS 18.5, bringing emergency satellite features to iPhone 13 users for the first time. Previously, these satellite capabilities were exclusive to iPhone 14 and newer models.
The iPhone’s emergency satellite system helps users in critical situations when cellular or Wi-Fi signals are unavailable. It lets users contact emergency services, send satellite texts, share info with contacts, or request roadside assistance.
Accessing Satellite Services via Carriers
The iOS 18.5 update focuses on enabling access to satellite services from carriers, such as T-Mobile’s partnership with Starlink. You can verify if you have access to this feature through the Cellular menu in the iPhone’s Settings.
Rescuers credit the feature with saving lives, including helping lost and injured hikers, rescuing people from wildfires, and more.
The expansion of satellite emergency services to iPhone 13 users is the key highlight of iOS 18.5, but iPhone owners are also getting several smaller updates.
This update also introduces a new feature to Screen Time, Apple’s parental control tool, which notifies parents if their child successfully enters the parent’s passcode to access Screen Time settings.
Additional iOS 18.5 Updates
Other updates include an improved Mail app with an “All Mail” tab, a new Pride wallpaper, easier Apple TV app subscriptions, and fixes for bugs with the Apple Vision Pro app, Siri, and enterprise apps.
iOS 18.5 was launched alongside iPadOS 18.5, which mainly includes bug fixes, as well as visionOS 2.5, watchOS 11.5, and security updates for macOS Ventura 13.7.6 (22H625) and macOS Sonoma 14.7.6.
