In the current era of internet- and cellular-connected vehicles, the demand for antennas is higher than ever. However, incorporating these devices into the body of vehicles imposes limitations on design possibilities. LG aims to revolutionize this with a transparent antenna seamlessly integrated into windshields.

Collaboration with Saint-Gobain Sekurit

Created in collaboration with the French glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Sekurit, the antenna comprises two interconnected strips of transparent film. Positioned at the upper edge of the windshield or on the glass sunroof (if present), these strips can either be applied to the glass surface or seamlessly incorporated into it.

While details about the functioning of the antenna are pending, a press release mentions that the device incorporates “more than 80 of LG’s patented innovations, including the design capability to make antenna patterns transparent and transparent electrode technology.”

Regardless of its composition, the antenna is asserted to effectively receive signals for 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, radio broadcasts, and satellite communications, which encompass GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System).

The transparent antenna technology is set to be formally revealed next month at CES in Las Vegas.
