OpenAI’s Latest Image Generator is Now Accessible to All Users

OpenAI’s latest image generator, powered by the GPT-4o model, is now accessible to all users, CEO Sam Altman announced on X. Previously, the feature was limited to ChatGPT’s paid subscribers.
The exact number of images free-tier users can generate remains unclear, but last week, Altman indicated a limit of three per day.
OpenAI’s Image Tool Surges in Popularity but Faces Copyright Concerns
OpenAI’s image generation tool saw immediate popularity after launch, with Altman stating that demand was so intense it was overwhelming the company’s GPUs. However, the tool also sparked controversy as users began transforming images into the style of Studio Ghibli, raising questions about copyright and the training data behind its artistic similarities.

Users Generate Fake Receipts, OpenAI Responds with Metadata Tracking
Some users also exploited the tool to create fake receipts, including restaurant bills. An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that all generated images contain metadata identifying ChatGPT as the source and that the company takes action against images that violate its guidelines.
Meanwhile, OpenAI announced today that it has secured $40 billion in funding, led by SoftBank, at a valuation of $300 billion. The company also reported that ChatGPT now has 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly active users.
