ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has created a robotics system enabling machines to handle household chores like folding laundry and cleaning tables.
Powered by artificial intelligence, the system lets robots follow spoken instructions and carry out tasks.
China’s Rapid Tech Advancements
China, home to ByteDance, is rapidly advancing in technology, with innovations such as DeepSeek and Manus.
Chipmaker Nvidia predicts that robotics will be the next major stage in AI’s evolution.
That’s because, while tech companies have spent years attempting to create a general-purpose robot, programming them has proven challenging — but AI makes the process far simpler.
ByteDance developed GR-3, a large-scale VLA model enabling robots to follow natural language commands and perform various tasks.
GR-3 essentially serves as the robot’s brain.
ByteMini Demonstrates GR-3’s Household Task Skills
For testing, ByteDance used a robot named ByteMini. Once equipped with GR-3, it could place a shirt on a hanger and hang it on a clothes rack.
A company video shows the robot sorting items by size, placing them in set spots, and doing chores like clearing a dining table.
GR-3 Trained with VR Interactions and Real-World Robot Mimicry
ByteDance’s Seed department says GR-3 was trained on image and text data, refined with VR interactions, and learned by mimicking real robots.
ByteDance seems to be doubling down on AI, having launched its Seed division in 2023.
This development comes amid renewed threats that TikTok could be banned in the U.S. unless the company sells its American operations.
On Thursday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said China or ByteDance may keep only a small stake.
But ultimately, Americans will control it. Lutnick told CNBC that Americans must control the tech and algorithm, or the U.S. will shut down TikTok.
