On Thursday, Apple announced that over 82% of supported iPhones are now using its newest mobile operating system, iOS 18 — an increase from 68% in January.
iOS 18 Launch and Compatibility Details
The company introduced iOS 18 last June at WWDC, and subsequently began releasing it to users in September 2024. Additionally, iOS 18 is compatible with the iPhone XR/XS and later models.
It’s important to mention that Apple groups all versions of iOS 18 together in these statistics, so the exact number of iPhones running the most recent iOS 18 update is unclear.
iPadOS 18 Adoption Reaches 71% on Compatible iPads
The company also reported that 71% of compatible iPads are currently running iPadOS 18.
Apple noted that over 88% of IPhones released in the past four years are using iOS 18, an increase from 76% in January. Similarly, around 81% of iPads released during the same period are running iPadOS 18.
No usage statistics were provided for Apple Intelligence.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple intends to raise prices for its upcoming iPhone models, set to launch this fall. However, the company is reportedly aiming to avoid directly linking the price increases to U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. Instead, Apple is considering attributing the hikes to other factors, such as new features and designs, as per sources within the supply chain.
Apple Faces $900 Million Tariff Cost, Shifts iPhone Imports to India
Apple is anticipated to face a $900 million cost due to higher tariffs in the third quarter, though the company has yet to confirm whether the U.S.-China trade conflict will affect its product prices. To offset the impact of tariffs, Apple has also increased its imports of iPhones from India instead of China.
U.S. and China Suspend Tariffs for 90 Days; Tech Sector Exemptions Granted
On Monday, the U.S. and China agreed to temporarily suspend their reciprocal tariffs for 90 days to allow for further negotiations. Additionally, the Trump administration has granted significant tariff exemptions for the tech sector, especially for smartphones, laptops, hard drives, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, though the previously imposed 20% tariff on Chinese goods remains in effect.
Apple is expected to unveil an ultra-thin iPhone later this year, according to multiple reports. The company also has more ambitious plans for 2027, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggesting that Apple may eliminate the iPhone’s cutout entirely by then. For the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, Apple is rumored to release a “mostly glass, curved iPhone” with no cutouts. This would mirror the company’s previous major redesign with the iPhone X in 2017, marking the smartphone’s 10th anniversary.
Despite the iPhone’s versatile capabilities, it lacks the ability to perform a seemingly straightforward function: recording phone conversations. However, the Magmo Pro offers iPhone users a straightforward solution, allowing them to effortlessly record phone calls without the need for complex procedures.
Magmo Pro
The Magmo Pro, developed by Korean company Mune, is presently the focus of a Kickstarter campaign. Serving as the successor to the previously crowdfunded Magmo, this device operates in a similar fashion while incorporating several notable enhancements.
Similar to its predecessor, the Magmo Pro is a slim, slab-shaped device that effortlessly attaches to the back of an iPhone 12 or newer models, utilizing the magnetic ring found in the phone’s MagSafe area. The recording process begins with a simple flick of its sole physical switch. The device employs a piezoelectric element to capture the vibrations emanating from the phone’s speaker, enabling it to record the voices of all individuals engaged in the conversation. This innovative method allows the Magmo Pro to effectively capture both sides of the dialogue.
The Magmo Pro will work with older iPhones and non-Apple smartphones, if an additional adhesive magnetic ring is applied to the phone
In contrast to the original version, which required manual uploading of recordings from its internal storage to a connected phone or computer for review, the Magmo Pro offers a seamless wireless solution. Recordings are instantly transmitted to an accompanying app on the iPhone, eliminating the need for additional steps. Furthermore, all recordings are equipped with time and date stamps, facilitating easy reference in the future.
Enhanced Noise Cancellation and Extended Battery Life
Moreover, the Magmo Pro incorporates strategically positioned MEMS microphones to effectively identify and eliminate background noise originating from the user’s side of the conversation. It is equipped with an upgraded lithium battery with a higher capacity of 500 mAh, surpassing the original version’s 280 mAh. While an exact runtime figure has not been provided, the original model reportedly offers a runtime of seven hours per 90-minute charge.
Conversations are saved on an accompanying app
A notable addition to the Pro is its automatic recording feature, which initiates the recording process whenever a call is received. This ensures that users do not miss capturing any unexpectedly important information.
However, this feature raises concerns regarding privacy and legality. According to a Mune representative, in most regions, recording conversations without informing the other party is often legally permissible if you are one of the participants. Nonetheless, out of courtesy, it is advisable to inform the other party about the recording.
Assuming the Magmo Pro successfully enters production, backers can secure one through a pledge of US$109, while the planned retail price is set at $169. The device’s functionality is demonstrated in the accompanying video.
