    Pioneering AR Computing with a Playful Tech Culture

    Founded in 2020, Sightful has offices in Tel Aviv, San Francisco, New York, and Taipei. Israeli CEO and co-founder Tamir Berliner, who previously worked on Magic Leap’s augmented reality, leads the company alongside COO and co-founder Tomer Kahan. The duo presents themselves with a playful tech persona, even highlighting on their website that their “team chat is 60% GIFs, 20% GenAI images, 20% actual words.

    Despite their somewhat cheesy “you-don’t-have-to-be-crazy-to-work-here” image, the duo is earning praise from major outlets like PCWorld, Wired, and Future, with reviewers calling their product a “game-changer” and the “future of computing,” even outperforming Meta’s devices and Apple’s Vision Pro.

    A Virtual Screen That Wraps Around You

    Known as the Spacetop, the system combines hardware and software to create a massive virtual screen that wraps around the user via custom augmented-reality glasses. In a style reminiscent of Minority Report, users can interact with the air-screen—pinning windows, resizing objects, and running most Windows and web apps, as well as the AOSP (open-source Android) OS. The hardware requires an Intel Core Ultra 7 or 9 processor with Meteor Lake architecture or newer.

    Some reviewers were surprised by the Spacetop’s price: $899 (about €788) plus a $200 yearly software subscription. Prescription lenses are optional, costing $50 for single vision or $150 for progressive, covering a range from +6.00 to -9.00.

    While not cheap, the device’s focus on corporate productivity makes its private, invisible screen a standout feature. Other perks include portability—the 106-gram headset adds virtually no extra weight for travel—and compact dimensions of 146 x 175 x 44 mm when unfolded.

    Reviewers also praise the Spacetop’s top-loaded display, which keeps the bottom third of the “screen” clear, allowing users to stay aware of their surroundings. This design helps reduce the motion sickness often associated with AR headsets and prevents accidents like kicking a pet or tripping over objects.

    The device also includes a travel mode that enhances motion tracking and a cursor that follows and predicts the user’s eye movements, eliminating the need to carry a mouse while on the go.

    Additionally, the ergonomic design can ease neck strain caused by looking down at traditional laptops, while the distraction of watching other people’s screens remains someone else’s problem.

    The Evolution of Add-On Monitors for Computers and Laptops

    Expanding screen space for computer and laptop users is not a new concept. Companies have introduced numerous add-on monitors, including single and dual-screen setups. In fact Kickstarter in March even proposed a four-screen configuration, although one of those screens wasn’t part of the base package.

    Aura Displays’ Triple Boost 14 Pro truly provides three additional 1080p screens that flank the main laptop display, all powered and connected via a single USB-C port. Users attach these anti-glare screens to a frame with an integrated, adjustable kickstand, customizing their viewing angles.

    Made from premium aluminum, the device works with laptops featuring screens from 11 to 18 inches. It features a 60 Hz refresh rate, 16 million+ colors, 300 nits brightness, and a 1,500:1 contrast ratio. It can also work with tablets and smartphones, although it seems to lack compatibility with iOS.

    After your session, the Triple Boost 14″ Pro folds for easy transport, adding 4.7 lb (2 kg) to your laptop bag.

    Intel Driver Boosts Integrated GPU Gaming by 25%

    Intel’s new graphics driver update (version 32.0.101.6734) boosts integrated GPU performance, raising average frame rates by around 10% and enhancing 1% low FPS by up to 25%. This update provides a notable upgrade for entry-level gaming, aiming to improve overall game performance and reduce stuttering during low-frame rate moments.

    Intel’s performance benchmarks were conducted on an MSI Claw 7 AI+ equipped with an Arc 140V GPU. The comparison focused on driver versions 32.0.101.6732 (released on April 2) and 32.0.101.6734 (released on April 8). The improvements are also incorporated in the subsequent driver updates released afterward.

    Driver Tweaks Favor Low-Power Integrated GPUs

    Intel notes that performance gains mainly apply at or below the 17W power level, which may explain the lack of similar claims for the desktop Arc B580 and B570, despite sharing the same architecture. Desktop GPUs, with their larger power budgets compared to integrated ones, might experience less impact from these optimizations.

    The new drivers support all Arc A/B-series GPUs and integrated graphics from the 11th-gen onward. Laptop users may experience instability or sleep issues with Intel’s generic drivers instead of OEM versions. Intel says laptop makers will roll out optimized, validated versions in the coming months.

    In 2022, Lenovo showcased a unique laptop with a display that expanded upward to provide more screen space. At CES 2025 last week, the company turned that concept into reality with the release of the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6.

    This laptop concept was first revealed at Lenovo’s Tech World 2022 event, alongside a Motorola phone with a screen that could extend to 6.5 inches when needed. Since then, several other ThinkBook concepts emerged, including one with a transparent display and another featuring a color E Ink top, but the rollable screen idea seemed to fade into the background.

    Until now. Later this year, the concept will come to life as the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 hits the market with a hefty price tag. Targeted at business professionals, it will also appeal to anyone who requires extra vertical screen space—such as coders, spreadsheet experts, and content creators.

    The OLED display starts at 14 inches diagonally, and with a simple button press or a wave in front of the webcam, the flexible screen extends to 16.7 inches from bottom corner to top. Regardless of the size, it offers refresh rates up to 120 Hz, 400 nits of brightness, and full coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Split-screen functionality and multiple window layouts are also supported.

    The laptop comes equipped with Series 2 Intel Core Ultra 7 processors, promising AI-optimized performance, integrated Arc X graphics, up to 32 GB of dual-channel RAM, and 1 TB of SSD storage. It features an edge-to-edge keyboard, Harman Kardon speakers, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4, and is currently undergoing durability tests to meet MIL-STD-810H standards.

    The Covid-19 pandemic brought significant societal changes, including a rise in remote work. Many professionals, especially men, have continued to work from home in various countries. However, few are aware that prolonged use of electronic devices can negatively impact male fertility. Could placing a laptop on your lap for long periods contribute to infertility?

    Impact on Sperm Production

    According to Dr. Isabel de Almeida, coordinator of the Fertility Center at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, sperm production—known as spermatogenesis—occurs more efficiently when the temperature of the testicles is about two degrees below body temperature. Prolonged use of heat-generating devices, such as laptops, raises the temperature of the scrotal area, which can harm sperm production. This may reduce the quantity and quality of sperm, even causing DNA damage.

    Other Sources of Heat and Their Effects

    The issue is wider than electronics. Activities that increase heat in the scrotal region, like saunas, hot tubs, and even cycling, can affect sperm quality. Dr. Isabel advises that men avoid using laptops on their laps and take frequent breaks to move around rather than remain seated for long periods in the same position.

    Lifestyle Matters, Too

    In addition to heat, several lifestyle factors can impact male fertility. Obesity, lack of exercise, poor diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking are all associated with reduced sperm counts. Obesity, in particular, causes metabolic changes that lower testosterone levels and increase scrotal temperature. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are another concern, as they can lead to testicular infections, further affecting sperm quality.

    Preventive Care: A New Focus for Men

    Dr. Isabel highlights the importance of men undergoing regular check-ups to monitor their reproductive health, much like women do with their routine gynecological visits. Male infertility accounts for approximately 40% of cases among couples seeking treatment. This emphasizes the need to include semen analysis as part of initial infertility investigations, a practice that was once rare.

    Prevention and Overall Health

    The expert stresses that addressing environmental factors and lifestyle choices improves male reproductive health and enhances overall well-being. Preventive care and medical follow-ups are essential to maintaining fertility and ensuring broader health benefits, especially in a world where modern lifestyles may pose additional risks.
