The code snippets mainly reference help cards designed to explain the features of the lossless tier and guide users on how to use or troubleshoot it.

Help Cards Highlight Lossless Audio and Premium Sound Quality

One card reads, “Lossless music, now in premium,” while another promotes it as offering “the best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.

Some cards alert users when certain tracks aren’t available in lossless or when poor connectivity could impact playback. Another recommends using Spotify Connect-compatible or wired devices for the best lossless experience.

Additionally, Reddit user u/bendotlc pointed out new changes in the latest mobile app version, where the code now references lossless audio with the message: “Say hello to the best sound quality on Spotify. Listen to high-fidelity music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.” According to the Redditor, the feature is already built into the app but remains disabled for now. (TechCrunch verified this information using data from Appsensa, detailed below.)

Of course, code mentions don’t guarantee that the lossless feature will launch soon.

Similar leaks and code hints have surfaced in past years, but the high-fidelity audio tier has yet to materialize.

Spotify Execs Stay Vague on Lossless Audio and Premium Tier Timeline

When questioned directly about lossless audio and future premium tiers during recent earnings calls, Spotify executives — including CEO Daniel Ek — only alluded to ongoing investments in premium offerings for “super fans.” They declined to provide a timeline for when these or other enhanced streaming features might be released.

Most recently, during the Q1 2025 earnings call, Spotify Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom reiterated that the company is continuing to invest in additional premium tiers.

As we’ve said before, we see strong potential in higher tiers,” Norstrom told investors. “We’re working on new offerings within these tiers because they create exciting opportunities to better serve our users.

Spotify HiFi Announced in 2021, Following Years of Lossless Testing

Spotify originally announced its lossless audio plan, then called Spotify HiFi, in 2021, promising music in a “CD-quality, lossless audio format.” However, the company had already been testing lossless options in the years prior.

Spotify eventually cited licensing challenges as the reason behind the delay in launching its lossless tier.

There may be progress on that front, though. In early 2025, Spotify signed new agreements with major labels like Warner Music and Universal Music Group, potentially clearing the path for the long-awaited high-fidelity option — at least, that’s what many fans are hoping.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg also reported that Spotify plans to introduce a premium “Music Pro” tier later in 2025, featuring high-quality streaming, remixing tools, and more.

Spotify has not commented on that report.

Updated after publication with new findings from Spotify’s mobile app.
