The $45K Rivian R2, with the Budget-Friendly R3, Enters the e-SUV Market
Rivian announced the launch of the smaller R2 SUV alongside the new R3 and R3X models, unveiling its SUV product roadmap. Built on Rivian’s latest midsize platform, these vehicles offer diverse battery options, providing a range of 300 miles (483 km) and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds. Priced at $45,000 for the R2 and even more affordably for the compact R3, Rivian aims to tap into the mass market with this lineup.
Diversifying Towards Budget-Friendly Models
Even prior to Rivian’s introduction of the five-seat R2, it was evident that the company needed to introduce more budget-friendly products to the market quickly. A car company cannot solely rely on two models, especially when pricing them at $70,000 for a pickup truck and $75,000 for an SUV.
A $45,000 electric SUV represents a positive progression, particularly considering the promising features revealed about the R2 by Rivian. While achieving a 300-mile range is a commendable goal, it is expected to incur an additional cost over the base price of $45,000 due to relying on the larger of the two planned battery options.
Rivian doesn’t disclose the exact capacities of its two upcoming battery packs, but they center around the newly developed 4695 cell, which boasts enhanced energy density and output. The company anticipates a quick charging time of 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes at a DC fast-charger. The R2 is equipped with native NACS and optional CCS capabilities, allowing access to Rivian’s Adventure Network and Tesla’s Supercharger network through an adapter.
Optimizing Performance and Affordability
The new midsize platform shared by the R2 and R3 models is engineered to optimize performance, range, and cost-effectiveness. Rivian achieved this by streamlining components through techniques such as high-pressure die castings, simplified closure structures, and a structural battery pack with a top that serves as the vehicle floor. These measures help maintain affordability for the new SUVs while upholding Rivian’s hallmark all-around performance that has defined its brand in the market.
Both the R2 and R3 will provide buyers with three powertrain options: single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD), and tri-motor setup with two rear motors and one front motor. Acceleration capabilities will peak at 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) in just under three seconds.
The R2’s Resemblance to the R1S
In terms of design, the R2 closely resembles its larger sibling, the R1S. Some may compare Rivian’s shorter, wider interpretation of pill-shaped LED lights to a pig’s snout, yet the SUV’s overall appearance mirrors its larger counterpart with a clean, classic, and straightforward aesthetic.
The R3 diverges from Rivian’s usual design language with its angular hatchback shape, evoking a vintage aesthetic. Despite potentially seeming outdated to some, it represents one of the best modern interpretations of traditional hatchback styling since the Honda e. In fact, it outshines the Honda with its sharper, sportier, and more rugged appearance, reminiscent of vehicles like the Lada 4×4 or classic VW Golf Country. The R3 boasts crisp lines, forward-angled rear pillars, contrast black arches, and compact pill lamps that complement its compact frame.
Introducing the Rivian R3 and R3X
Described by Rivian as a fresh approach to “what a crossover can be,” the R3 combines elements of both boxy and sporty crossover designs. Additionally, Rivian introduces the R3X, a rally-inspired performance variant promising enhanced capabilities. While specific performance upgrades and pricing details for the R3X remain undisclosed, its unveiling alongside the standard R3 suggests exciting developments ahead.
“Our R1 flagship vehicles served as our introduction to the world. With the R2 and R3, our goal is to maintain Rivian’s core product characteristics while making them accessible to a wider audience,” said Jeff Hammoud, chief design officer. “We’ve integrated hardware, software, and human-centered design principles to balance form and function in the R2, staying true to our iconic design language.”
Rivian’s Advanced Tech in the R2 and R3
Rivian commits to providing next-generation autonomous capabilities in both the R2 and R3 with an advanced sensor suite featuring 11 cameras, five radar units, and enhanced computing power. The integrated software will allow these SUVs to evolve and improve their performance over time through regular updates.
Rivian’s Advanced Tech in the R2 and R3
As Rivian enters the mainstream market, it maintains its adventurous spirit, reminiscent of its original releases like an overland camper pickup with a built-in slide-out kitchen. The R2 features a rear “accessory port” system for effortless mounting of bike racks and other cargo gear. With all five seats folding flat, the R2 transforms into a functional micro-camper, eliminating the need for extras like rooftop tents. Plus, pop-out vented rear quarter windows and roll-down rear glass ensure ventilation on both on- and off-road journeys.
The R2 can now be reserved with a $100 deposit, which is refundable. Rivian intends to commence production at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, during the first half of 2026. Following the R2, production of the R3 and R3X is planned, although Rivian has not provided a more detailed timeline for their release.
Balancing Presentation and Substance in the R2/R3 Introduction
The split-screen presentation in the R2/R3 introduction below can be somewhat bothersome, yet it places greater emphasis on the actual vehicles compared to the overly dramatic R2 commercial, making it the preferable option. Additionally, it’s condensed to under a minute.
