The World’s Biggest Subwoofer Spans Over 8 Feet in Diameter

This one’s giving serious Back to the Future vibes. Germany’s Ascendo Immersive Audio, already known for creating the world’s most powerful subwoofer—the massive 80-inch “80 Sub“—has now taken things even further with a new 100-inch model.

For decades, people have been fascinated by the futuristic tech imagined in the Back to the Future trilogy—from hoverboards and time-traveling DeLoreans to shrink-to-fit clothes, self-lacing shoes, and holographic sharks lunging at your head.

Marty McFly’s Legendary Power Chord Moment

One of my favorite moments comes right at the start of the first film, when Marty McFly walks into Doc Brown’s garage lab and starts flipping satisfyingly analog switches, turning dials, and finally plugging an instrument cable into the “CRM-114” amp and his yellow Chiquita guitar—just before a single power chord blasts him across the room.

I imagine high-end home theater fans experiencing Ascendo’s newest monster subwoofers for the first time will also feel that powerful low-end rumble—though probably with less dramatic airborne results.

Since 1999, Ascendo has been crafting high-end loudspeakers, praised globally for their audiophile-grade sound quality. Their product line also includes amplifiers and subwoofers, and in 2017, the company made waves with a massive passive subwoofer featuring a custom-built 50-inch driver and dual 13.5-inch voice coils.

Ascendo’s Relentless Pursuit of Bass Dominance

Powered by a 20-kW DSP/amplifier system, this sub can hit frequencies as low as 1 Hz and move as much air as 40 standard 18-inch subwoofers. But Ascendo didn’t stop there. A few years later, they unveiled the 80 Sub—widely regarded as the most powerful and accurate cinema subwoofer available. That is, until now.

We take pride in leading the field in infrasonic bass,” said Geoffrey Heinzel of Ascendo. “Our constant innovation in this space delivers a high-performance, emotionally immersive experience that elevates cutting-edge home theaters and music systems with bass you can truly feel.

And you’ll definitely feel it. Ascendo is replacing its 50- and 80-inch subwoofers with two massive upgrades: a 64-inch powerhouse and a colossal 100-inch model, both engineered to deliver even more intense, ultra-low-frequency impact. “These are the world’s largest subwoofers designed for home cinema,” said Geoffrey Heinzel. “They’re unbelievably powerful, efficient, and responsive.

Precision Tuning and Materials Behind the Massive Woofers

To boost performance, the company introduced a shallower compliance curve, enhanced the quad suspension system for better linear and non-linear movement, and incorporated advanced materials for quiet, distortion-free operation. The voice coil at the heart of the enormous cone measures 21 inches across—larger than many standalone subwoofers.

Cabinet upgrades include stiffer construction for better control, deeper enclosures to extend low-end frequency response, and multi-density damping materials to reduce resonance. For specialized setups, optional enclosures with advanced internal bracing are also available.

The 100 Sub Pro’s driver alone weighs around 260 kg (over 570 pounds), and total weight will rise significantly with a custom enclosure.

These monsters are designed for premium home theater systems and will carry a price tag to match—though exact figures haven’t been disclosed. If you’re near Raleigh, North Carolina this weekend, you can catch Ascendo at Audio Advice Live and ask in person. AV Nirvana is also airing an exclusive interview from the event for more details.
