Engineers have spent years exploring alternatives to the traditional computer mouse, creating designs that are pen-shaped, flat, and even ring-shaped. Just when mouse designs seemed exhausted, UK startup NextAxis Design introduced an egg-shaped mouse called Ovo on Kickstarter.
Ovo weighs 98 grams (3.5 oz) and measures 48 × 61 mm (1.9 × 2.4 inches). Designed to rest naturally in the palm, it aims to encourage more ergonomic hand positioning and smoother movement. The device works in the air or on a mouse pad, both designed to reduce wrist strain. Its unconventional design may require a learning curve, which could be one of its biggest drawbacks.
Unlike a standard mouse, Ovo doesn’t rely on sliding across a surface. Instead, it tracks hand movement in 3D space, moving the cursor through tilting and rotating instead of dragging. It also includes familiar functions like clicking and scrolling.

Broad Compatibility and Advanced Customization Features
The device requires no drivers and works wirelessly across major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. It can pair with multiple devices through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and is also designed to integrate with smart home systems.
A major highlight of the device is its customization options.Users can adjust sensitivity, create macros and gestures, and set custom profiles for different workflows. Its two-shell design assigns tapping and cursor control to the upper half and swiping and scrolling to the lower half.
The mouse is designed to deliver steady and accurate cursor control, making it suitable for tasks such as 3D manipulation, presentations, and creative design applications. For instance, video editors may find it more convenient to move through timelines using smooth rotational gestures rather than the conventional drag-and-drop actions required by a standard mouse.

Although Ovo offers the same core functionality as a conventional mouse, its creators admit that it may not completely replace traditional models for every type of workflow. Since it is mainly intended as a pointing device, users performing highly precise tasks may still prefer a standard mouse in certain situations.
Long Battery Life, Wireless Charging, and Kickstarter Launch Details
Ovo is powered by a rechargeable battery that reportedly delivers up to 80 hours of usage on a single charge. It supports both wireless charging and USB-C charging, features a glossy polymer exterior, and comes in black, white, and orange color options.
The device is currently available on Kickstarter at an early-backer price of US$109, while the expected retail price is set at $199. The package includes the Ovo mouse, a USB-C cable, and a charging pad. If the crowdfunding campaign meets its goals, shipping is expected to start in December.
