Volkswagen’s Most Affordable EV Debuts with Rivian Software Integration

Volkswagen’s budget-friendly EV, the ID EVERY1—a compact four-door hatchback unveiled on Wednesday—will be the first to feature Rivian’s software and vehicle architecture, according to a source familiar with the model.
Set for production in 2027, the ID EVERY1 will start at 20,000 euros ($21,500). Another model, the ID.2all, priced around 25,000 euros, is expected to arrive in 2026. Both are part of Volkswagen’s new line of urban front-wheel-drive EVs under the “Brand Group Core,” catering to the European market.
The ID EVERY1 marks the first deployment of Rivian’s technology under a $5.8 billion joint venture between the two automakers. Meanwhile, the ID.2all will use Volkswagen’s E3 1.1 software, developed by its subsidiary Cariad.
Though Volkswagen did not mention Rivian in its announcement, it highlighted advancements in software capabilities. Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Technical Development, emphasized that the model will feature a “fundamentally new, highly capable software architecture,” allowing updates and customization even after purchase.
Rivian’s Software to Power Volkswagen ID EVERY1 in Strategic Joint Venture
Sources confirmed to TechCrunch that Rivian’s software will be integrated into the ID EVERY1, though neither company has officially commented. The partnership benefits Rivian by providing financial support and business expansion, while Volkswagen gains advanced EV software to enhance competitiveness. Both companies aim to lower development costs and accelerate innovation through their joint venture, Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies.
The joint venture is an equal partnership with co-CEOs, led by Rivian’s head of software, Wassym Bensaid, and Volkswagen Group’s chief technical engineer, Carsten Helbing. Initially headquartered in Palo Alto, California, the venture plans to establish three additional locations across North America and Europe.

Volkswagen CEO Calls ID EVERY1 the Final Step in Expanding Affordable EV Lineup
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and head of the Brand Group Core, described the ID EVERY1 as the final step toward offering the broadest model lineup in the volume segment. “With this addition, we will provide every customer with the right vehicle and powertrain, including an affordable all-electric entry-level option. Our aim is to become the world’s leading high-volume manufacturer in technology by 2030, staying true to Volkswagen’s identity as a brand for everyone,” he said in a statement.
Currently, the ID EVERY1 remains a concept with limited details. Volkswagen states that the vehicle will feature a newly developed 70 kW electric motor, a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph), and a minimum range of 250 kilometers (150 miles). Slightly larger than VW’s previous UP! model, the compact EV will accommodate four passengers and offer a luggage capacity of 305 liters.
