With Apple’s WWDC just weeks away, the company is signaling a strong focus on the growing mobile gaming market. This move highlights Apple’s ambition to expand its presence, enhance user experiences, and drive innovation in gaming on iOS devices.

Apple has established a presence in mobile gaming with its subscription-based Arcade service, offering curated, ad-free games like the indie hit Stardew Valley. Now, Apple is expanding its role by acquiring its first game studio, RAC7, creators of the popular Apple Arcade game Sneaky Sasquatch. This move signals Apple’s commitment to producing exclusive, high-quality games and competing more directly with traditional publishers and streaming services investing in exclusive content.

Apple and Other Industry Giants Bet Big on Mobile Gaming

Apple is joining other unexpected players investing in mobile gaming. For example, Netflix entered mobile gaming in 2021 by acquiring studios and launching cloud-based games for subscribers. This shift highlights mobile gaming’s growing appeal for user engagement, revenue, and digital service integration. Apple’s move reflects its recognition of mobile gaming as a key growth area in an evolving industry.

In addition, Bloomberg has confirmed a 9to5Mac report that Apple is working on a dedicated gaming app for iOS 19. This new app is expected to replace the existing Game Center app and integrate with Apple Arcade, featuring gaming leaderboards, personalized recommendations, challenges, and social elements. It may also connect with iMessage or FaceTime to enable remote multiplayer gaming experiences.

Apple’s growing focus on mobile gaming aligns with the rise of cloud gaming, which allows streaming without big downloads. Microsoft has been a key player in this space with its Xbox Cloud Gaming platform.
