
Human beings are naturally anthropocentric, often viewing ourselves as the pinnacle of evolution. Yet, in terms of biomass, humans are insignificant compared with plants and other forms of life. Scientists estimate that Earth is home to more than three trillion trees—far more than the number of stars in our galaxy. When the hundreds of thousands of plant species are included, the scale of plant life becomes enormous. Despite this, many people still assume humans are the most intelligent and conscious organisms on the planet.
But consciousness may not be something exclusive to humans. Some scientific research suggests that plants and other organisms could possess forms of awareness, meaning humans might be vastly outnumbered by potentially conscious beings.
Plant neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso has pointed to several intriguing examples. Plants appear to respond to anesthesia in ways comparable to humans, becoming temporarily unresponsive. Even Venus flytraps stop reacting to insects when anesthetized. Plants also respond to environmental changes in complex ways. For example, some species have gradually shifted their ranges northward as global temperatures have risen.
Bean Plants Appear to Sense and Navigate Their Surroundings
Mancuso also investigated whether plants can recognize and respond to their surroundings. In one experiment, he placed a bean plant near a metal support. After reaching the top of its existing support, the plant repeatedly extended a hooked shoot toward the nearby metal pole until it successfully attached itself. The behavior suggested that the plant could detect the location of the object and adjust its growth accordingly.
In another study, Mancuso observed what happened when two bean plants encountered the same support. The plant that arrived second appeared to recognize that the other had already claimed the support and began searching for an alternative. Mancuso argued that this behavior indicated an awareness of both the physical environment and the actions of another plant—something that would often be described as consciousness in animals.
Researcher Monica Gagliano conducted similar experiments with mimosa plants, which rapidly fold their leaves when touched. She repeatedly dropped the plants from a short height, initially causing them to close their leaves. After repeated exposure, however, the plants stopped reacting to the drop. When the experiment was repeated weeks later, they still showed little response, suggesting that they may have retained some form of memory.
Plants May Have Two Forms of Decision-Making
In 2025, Mancuso and Tomonori Kawano explored whether plants use both unconscious reactions and more deliberate, memory-based decision-making.
Another hypothesis proposes that self-awareness could emerge when a system contains enough interconnected nodes. Systems theorist Jamie Monat has suggested that around 70 billion nodes could potentially be sufficient for human-level self-awareness. Large forests, however, can contain billions of trees, while the connections between plants and fungi could create networks far more complex than this threshold. If individual cells also possess some form of consciousness, the number of potential conscious units could be vastly greater.
Evidence of sophisticated plant communication can also be seen in the relationship between acacia trees and kudu antelope in South Africa. During a drought, kudu consumed large quantities of acacia leaves. In response, the trees increased the concentration of tannins in their foliage, making the leaves toxic. Even more remarkably, nearby acacia trees received chemical signals warning them of the threat and also increased their tannin levels.
Such behaviors are usually explained through chemical signaling, adaptation, and evolutionary processes rather than intelligence or consciousness. Yet human behavior itself ultimately results from biological processes and complex electrical and chemical activity in the brain. These observations therefore raise an intriguing question: could consciousness exist in forms far different from our own? Perhaps humans should reconsider the assumption that we are the only—or even the most—conscious beings on Earth.
