
A new study suggests that once-weekly interval walking may provide meaningful health benefits for adults with central obesity. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong found that completing 75 minutes of brisk interval walking during one weekly session produced improvements similar to spreading the same amount of exercise across three sessions. The results offer an interesting perspective on how people with busy schedules might approach regular physical activity.
The study focused on adults who were overweight and had excess fat around the waist. After four months, participants in both exercise groups showed improvements in body-fat measures, waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness. However, the findings should not be interpreted as proof that one weekly workout is universally better than more frequent physical activity. Instead, the research suggests that concentrating a specific amount of interval exercise into one session may still provide measurable benefits for some adults.
Why One Weekly Workout Matters for Busy Adults
Finding enough time for exercise can prove difficult for many people. Work, education, family responsibilities, commuting, and other commitments can make several weekly workouts challenging. Consequently, some people may struggle to follow exercise schedules that require activity on multiple days.
Interval training offers one possible solution because it alternates periods of more vigorous movement with easier recovery periods. In this study, researchers examined whether concentrating the weekly exercise requirement into one session could produce results comparable to dividing it across three days.
The research team also considered previous evidence surrounding the so-called “weekend warrior” approach. That pattern involves completing most physical activity during one or two days instead of spreading it evenly throughout the week. Earlier research had linked this approach with health benefits, but less evidence existed about concentrating interval training into a single weekly session.
Therefore, the Hong Kong researchers wanted to test the question more directly. Could adults achieve similar improvements by completing their weekly interval-training target in one session?
The answer from this trial was encouraging. Both exercise schedules produced comparable improvements after 16 weeks. As a result, once-weekly interval training may represent another practical option for adults who find frequent exercise difficult to maintain. Still, the researchers did not suggest abandoning other forms of physical activity. Rather, the findings highlight another potentially accessible way to meet exercise goals.
How Researchers Compared One and Three Sessions
The study involved 315 Chinese adults aged 18 and older. All participants had overweight and central obesity. Researchers conducted the randomized trial in Hong Kong between September 2021 and September 2024.
Participants joined one of three groups. The first group completed interval training once each week. The second group performed the same type of training three times per week. Meanwhile, a control group participated in health education sessions instead of the exercise program.
Importantly, both exercise groups completed the same total amount of interval training: 75 minutes per week. The main difference involved how participants distributed that time. One group completed the entire 75-minute workout during a single session. The other group divided the total into three separate sessions.
Researchers then assessed participants at several points during the study. Measurements occurred before the program, after 16 weeks, and again during a follow-up period. The team used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to assess body composition.
This design allowed the researchers to make a clearer comparison between the two exercise schedules. Instead of comparing different amounts of exercise, they compared different ways of distributing the same weekly amount.
Furthermore, the study included a control group. This gave researchers a reference point for understanding whether changes in the exercise groups differed from those seen among participants who did not follow the interval-training program.
The findings showed that both exercise schedules produced similar improvements. Thus, the frequency of the sessions did not appear to create a major difference in the measured outcomes during the trial.
What Changed After 16 Weeks of Exercise
After 16 weeks, participants in both interval-training groups showed improvements in several health-related measures. These included total body-fat mass, body-fat percentage, and waist circumference.
In addition, both groups improved their cardiorespiratory fitness compared with the control group. Cardiorespiratory fitness reflects how effectively the body can supply and use oxygen during physical activity. Therefore, improvements in this area can provide an important indicator of better physical fitness.
Notably, the researchers found similar results whether participants completed their 75 minutes of interval training in one session or divided it across three sessions. This finding challenges the assumption that exercise must always occur on several separate days to produce meaningful benefits.
However, the study has an important scope. Researchers studied adults with overweight and central obesity, so the findings should not automatically apply to every population. Moreover, the study examined a specific interval-training program rather than every possible type of exercise.
The results also do not mean that people should exercise only once per week. Instead, they suggest that a once-weekly schedule could provide a useful alternative for adults who face significant time barriers.
For many people, consistency matters when building an exercise routine. Consequently, a schedule that someone can realistically maintain may prove more useful than an ideal plan that repeatedly gets abandoned.
The researchers therefore described once-weekly interval training as a potentially practical strategy. At the same time, broader physical-activity guidance remains important because exercise can support cardiovascular fitness, mobility, and overall health in several ways.
What This Study Could Mean for Future Exercise Plans
The study adds evidence to the growing discussion about how exercise frequency affects health outcomes. Traditional exercise programs often spread workouts across several days. However, real-life schedules do not always make that approach easy to maintain.
Because both exercise groups completed the same 75-minute weekly total, the researchers could examine whether distributing the activity differently changed the results. Their findings suggest that, for this particular group of adults, completing the activity once per week produced improvements comparable to three weekly sessions.
Nevertheless, one study cannot establish that the same pattern will work for everyone. Future research could examine different populations, exercise intensities, longer follow-up periods, and other forms of interval training.
The research also reinforces an important principle: physical activity does not necessarily have to follow one rigid schedule. For adults who struggle to exercise several times each week, a manageable routine may offer a realistic starting point.
Overall, the University of Hong Kong study provides useful evidence about exercise scheduling. Its main message is not that people need only one workout each week. Instead, it shows that a concentrated weekly interval-training session may still produce measurable benefits for certain adults.
