$299 Mini Rover Can Be Controlled From Anywhere on Earth Via 4G

FrodoBots
Always wanted to drive a Mars rover? Well, unfortunately, that’s not possible. However, you can buy and operate a four-wheeled rover that can be controlled from anywhere on the planet through 4G cellular networks. And, aptly enough, it’s called the EarthRover.
Built on Advanced Technology from Leading Institutions
Manufactured by Singapore-based startup FrodoBots, the EarthRover is built on technologies already used by institutions such as UC Berkeley, the National University of Singapore, and Georgia Tech. It’s available in three models, depending on the buyer’s budget and intended use.
The top-tier model is the EarthRover Zero.
With an aluminum body, the robot can reach speeds of up to 3.4 km/h (2.1 mph), transmitting live video from raised front and rear cameras (with the help of headlights) as it moves. Additionally, thanks to an integrated mic and speaker, users can engage with curious onlookers while the rover is on the move.

The robot is manually controlled in real time via a game controller, steering wheel, or keyboard connected to an online computer. According to FrodoBots, the communication lag is typically less than one second, depending on both the rover’s and the user’s cellular coverage. It’s important to note that the Zero requires a 4G SIM card with a data plan.

Affordable, Efficient, and Ready for Preorder
The rover weighs 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) and runs for up to five hours on a full charge of its lithium battery. It’s available for preorder now at a sale price of $299 (retail price $399), with shipping expected in July.
Next is the EarthRover Mini +. As you might expect, it’s smaller than the Zero, weighing just 1.5 kg (3.3 lb). This smaller size also means the cameras sit lower to the ground, and its lower-capacity battery offers up to four hours of runtime.

It’s on sale for $199 (retail price $299) and should ship in May.
Finally, there’s the base-model Mini. It’s essentially the Mini + but with a single front-facing camera. It’s available now for a discounted price of $149 (regular price $249). Potential buyers may also want to check out the Leo Rover, formerly known as the Turtle Rover.
