Apple’s Augmented Reality Ambitions and AI Challenges Ahead of WWDC 2025

Apple has been striving to develop true augmented reality glasses for a long time but has encountered challenges in matching its AI capabilities with competitors. While many AI-related announcements are anticipated at WWDC 2025 soon, some may be received with skepticism due to the gradual and occasionally problematic launch of its Apple Intelligence suite.

Meanwhile, other companies have already made significant strides with AI-powered smart glasses. Meta has enjoyed considerable success through its collaboration with Ray-Ban. Google recently revealed new plans for its Android XR mixed reality glasses during its I/O event. OpenAI is also entering the hardware space following its acquisition of Jony Ive’s design startup, io, though it has yet to share details on upcoming projects. Apple’s glasses appear to be more similar to Meta’s approach than to Google’s display-focused model, but more information is expected soon.

As Apple works to prepare smart glasses for release next year, it has shelved some other wearable projects. Sources cited by Gurman reveal that plans for a camera-equipped Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra have been dropped. However, AirPods featuring cameras are still reportedly in development.
