BenQ Invites Movie Lovers to Relax and Look up
In 2021, BenQ introduced a portable projector resembling a Bluetooth speaker, offering large-scale visuals. Now, they’ve expanded the lineup with a flagship model designed for an unconventional viewing surface—the ceiling.
The GV50, featuring a distinctive waterdrop design, retains the dual 4-watt midrange drivers from the previous GV30 model. However, BenQ has enhanced the bass with a 10-watt woofer, promising richer Dolby Audio soundtracks to complement the ceiling-projected images.
Flexible Projection Options
You don’t have to aim the projector at the ceiling to enjoy content via Google TV (including Netflix)—and if your ceiling is textured, you might prefer not to. The unit offers 135-degree vertical projection flexibility and 360-degree horizontal rotation thanks to a rotating base, allowing you to project onto a nearby wall or screen instead.
The DLP projector delivers 1080p resolution at a 16:9 aspect ratio, with an image size of up to 120 inches diagonally. However, the laser light source only provides 500 ANSI lumens, making it best suited for after-dark viewing. The GV50 also features autofocus, keystone correction, obstacle avoidance, screen fit, and digital zoom. Additionally, the remote allows for vertical and horizontal image adjustment.
The projector’s two-stage tilt ensures optimal angles, with 24-bit color, 92% Rec.709 gamut, 100,000
If you still can’t achieve the perfect angle when placing the projector on a bedside table, the base offers a convenient two-stage tilt feature to project at an upward angle. Other notable specs include 24-bit color, 92% coverage of the Rec.709 color gamut, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, and support for HDR and HLG content.
The projector has a built-in battery that provides up to 2.5 hours of wireless use per charge (though brightness decreases when unplugged) or 280 minutes when used solely as a Bluetooth speaker. It charges via USB-C. Additional ports include HDMI with audio return, USB Type-A, and a headphone jack. Bluetooth 5.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi are also onboard, with support for AirPlay and Google Cast.
“For today’s digital entertainment lovers, the GV50 provides the unique ability to stream high-quality content in comfortable, personalized spaces, perfect for enjoying some well-deserved me-time,” said company president Peter YF Huang. “Even those new to projectors can effortlessly swap out their TVs and enjoy relaxed movie nights right from bed.”
The BenQ GV50 is priced at a suggested retail price of US$799 but is currently available for $599.
