In 2023, Qualcomm shook up the audiophile world by introducing XPAN, a mobile audio platform that relies on Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth. Now, the first wireless earphones featuring XPAN have been unveiled.

For most mobile users, Bluetooth offers sufficient bandwidth for on-the-go music without requiring wired connections. Xiaomi’s standard Buds 5 Pro, for instance, utilize aptX Lossless technology, enabling transmission speeds of up to 2.1 Mbps and supporting high-resolution wireless audio at 24-bit/48-kHz.

Xiaomi Elevates Audio Quality with XPAN Technology

For those seeking even higher audio quality, Xiaomi has exciting news. The Buds 5 Pro are also available with Qualcomm’s S7 Pro platform, which incorporates Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology. While designed to support lossless audio up to 192 kHz, the Wi-Fi-enabled Buds deliver 4.2 Mbps transmission speeds and 24-bit/96-kHz resolution, promising an unparalleled high-fidelity listening experience.

This technology allows users to move farther from their audio source while maintaining a stable connection and improving battery efficiency. The Buds provide 10 hours of playback per charge, with the charging case extending total listening time to 40 hours. Additionally, the case supports Qi wireless charging for added convenience.

Advanced Audio Engineering and Versatile Features

Xiaomi has designed the Buds with a dual-amp, triple-driver system that includes an 11-mm dual-magnet driver, a planar driver, and a ceramic tweeter. Users can customize the active noise cancellation, which is engineered to minimize everyday background noise for an immersive listening experience. The Buds can also function as a portable microphone, offering up to four hours of recording. Additional features include touch controls, an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance, and compatibility with “specialized EW profiles” via the mobile app.

Now for the downside—at least for the time being. The Buds 5 Pro Wi-Fi edition is currently compatible only with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra smartphone. However, Xiaomi has assured users that additional devices will soon support 4.2 Mbps lossless audio.

The standard Buds 5 Pro are priced at €199.99, while the Wi-Fi edition costs €219.99 (approximately $230). There’s no official confirmation yet on a U.S. release.
