BYD Plans to Integrate Self-Driving Technology into All its Electric Vehicles

BYD announced plans to equip all its electric vehicles (EVs) with advanced self-driving technology earlier this week. The Financial Times reported the announcement, which took place during a livestreamed event at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China. “We are entering an era where autonomous driving is for everyone,” said Founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu. “In the next two to three years, it will become as essential as seat belts or airbags.”

Previously, BYD reserved its driver-assistance features for higher-end models priced above $30,000. However, Fortune reports that the “God’s Eye” system will now be included in all BYD vehicles at no additional cost. The system will offer capabilities such as freeway navigation, automatic parking, and autonomous overtaking and braking.

Nissan-Honda merger talks collapse as Japanese automakers struggle to keep pace with the EV revolution

The announcement comes shortly after merger negotiations between Nissan and Honda broke down following a month of discussions. Once dominant in global automotive markets, both Japanese automakers have faced increasing challenges amid the rapid rise of the EV industry.

BYD has yet to announce when it will launch the “God’s Eye” system in its vehicles or whether existing EVs can support it. According to The Straits Times, the company has obtained China’s first Level 3 assisted driving test license.

Meanwhile, Tesla is awaiting approval to begin testing its “Full Self-Driving” features in China. To stay ahead in this technology, BYD will need to move swiftly.
