Get Inspired by this Amazing Story. Her Pure Maths Journey

Maria Esipova is a student who has loved maths since she was very young. Her parents, who are engineers, encouraged her interest in math and science. Maria moved to Canada when she was in third grade and enrolled in a unique program for math and science in high school.

When Maria started studying Maths at Waterloo, she had to change how she thought about studying and math itself. It was challenging but also very rewarding. She began to understand what it means to be a mathematician.

During the pandemic, Maria had the opportunity to research with Professor Karen Yeats. Professor Yeats was very impressed with Maria’s work and thinks she is one of the top undergraduate researchers she has worked with.

Through her research, Maria discovered her passion for algebraic combinatorics. She likes how it allows her to use tools from different subjects to solve difficult problems. Her research with Professor Yeats led to a paper that will be published in a math journal.

In September, Maria will start a Master’s program in Pure Maths at the University of British Columbia. She will continue studying algebraic combinatorics and also learn how to teach math at the university level. Maria is grateful for the support and guidance she received from Professor Yeats and her other supervisor, Olya Mandelshtam.

Maria feels honored to be recognized for her work. She is thankful to Waterloo and her professors for giving her the opportunity to grow and excel in math. She hopes to continue her work in graduate school.
