Here’s the Latest on the Toyota S-FR: What’s Its Current Status?
The Toyota S-FR Concept was first shown at the 2015 Tokyo Auto Show. It was meant to be a small, affordable sports car with seating for four, positioned below the 86 Coupe (known as the Scion FR-S) in Toyota’s lineup.
Toyota’s Sports
Inspired by Toyota’s Sports 800 from the 1960s, the S-FR aimed to provide a fun and engaging driving experience. Its design emphasized a compact size, following a Small, Front-engine, Rear-drive layout, and featured a friendly and inviting appearance, similar to a MINI Cooper.
The S-FR would have been smaller than the 86 but larger than a Mazda Miata, with distinctive dimensions making it stand out in Toyota’s showroom. While Toyota revealed some details like its manual transmission and lightweight build, specifics about its engine and components remained uncertain, including rumors about using parts from the Miata.
At the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon, a racing version called the Toyota S-FR Racing Concept was showcased, showcasing a more aggressive design with added aerodynamic features. However, despite these promising concepts, neither the S-FR nor its racing version progressed beyond the concept stage. The reasons for this remain unclear, but it’s a regrettable outcome given the excitement generated around these potential models.
