Instagram is Experimenting with a Feature that Allows Users to Repost Content

Instagram is currently testing a repost feature, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday. This development isn’t unexpected, as the platform has been seen working on such a feature since 2022.
A few users have already noticed the repost option on their accounts, with one mentioning that it allows sharing both their own posts and those of others.
Adding to Instagram’s Growing Content Overload
However, if Instagram officially rolls out the feature, some users may push back. Critics may argue that it adds yet another layer to an already cluttered platform filled with Stories, Reels, Notes, DMs, ads, and more.
Still, others may embrace the feature, as it offers a convenient way to share and highlight content—much like what users already do on other social media platforms.
While users can currently share someone else’s post to their Story, the new repost feature would allow them to reshare posts directly to their main Feed. Currently, many people rely on third-party apps or manual methods to do this, so an official option would eliminate the need for such workarounds.
Greater Reach and Proper Content Attribution
For creators, this feature could serve as a tool to expand their audience and increase visibility. Additionally, since users frequently repost memes and images on Instagram without crediting the original creators, a built-in repost feature could encourage proper attribution and give creators the recognition they deserve as their content spreads.
Introducing reposting on Instagram aligns with trends across other platforms like Threads and TikTok, which already support similar features. Twitter originally popularized this concept with its “Retweet” feature back in 2009.
As with any test, it’s unclear when—or if—Instagram will roll out the repost feature to all users.
