Known as the Electric Salt Spoon, the device was developed through a collaboration with researchers from Meiji University and went on sale in Japan in May 2024 in limited numbers.
The spoon uses a mild electric current to concentrate sodium ions on the tongue’s taste receptors, making food taste saltier without adding extra salt. Users can choose from different intensity settings to suit various foods and personal tastes.
the developers specifically designed the spoon for low-sodium dishes such as soups, broths, and other liquid-based meals, helping users maintain flavor while reducing salt intake.
Potential Health Benefits Drive Demand and Product Expansion
According to the company, the technology could support efforts to lower the risk of health conditions linked to excessive sodium consumption, including hypertension and heart disease. Strong consumer interest led to increased production and the release of the Electric Salt Cup, a cup-shaped version for soups and beverages that relies on the same technology.
Currently, the product is available only in Japan, with international market trials planned to begin in 2026.
