Knaus Unveils an Innovative Lightweight RV Designed for the Electric Mobility Era

Knaus-Tabbert, long a pioneer in adapting to electric vehicles (EVs), has transformed this experience into a fully redesigned camping trailer, the Yaseo model. It's tailored for towing by EVs and boasts a flexible floor plan with adaptable spaces, including a dinette that converts into a Murphy bed, an expandable wet bathroom with accordion-style features, and an optional fold-down bunk. The trailer features lightweight materials, aerodynamic improvements, and a gas-free power system that connects to the EV, ensuring continuous power for lighting and amenities.

EV-Focused Design and Range Optimization

Introduced at the 2023 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the Yaseo series comprises two models. One was exhibited alongside a Kia EV6, emphasizing its EV-friendly design with hitch receivers, and a focus on mitigating the factors that typically deplete an EV’s range when towing: reducing aerodynamic resistance and weight.

The Yaseo trailer may not have the sleek appearance of many other camping trailers on the market, especially when compared to the Caravisio concept that Knaus introduced a decade ago. However, Knaus has taken steps to improve its aerodynamics by tapering the front-end, which reduces the bulk of the trailer’s nose and creates a more natural path for air to flow.

This design adjustment results in a 14% reduction in the frontal area, leading to decreased drag and improved fuel efficiency and electric vehicle (EV) range when towing.

Achieving Maximum Usable Space in a Compact Trailer

On the weight-saving side of things, Knaus has adopted a comprehensive approach. They have managed to incorporate the features of a larger floor plan into a shorter trailer. Specifically, the 7.3-meter (24-foot) Yaseo 500 DK offers the same usable space as the larger 7.9-meter (26-foot) Sudwind 580 QS, despite having a smaller floor space of 10.8 square meters (116 square feet) compared to the Sudwind’s 13.3 square meters (143 square feet).

In order to achieve this efficient use of space, Knaus draws inspiration from the 2014 Travelino Concept, with a strong emphasis on versatile spaces, structural elements, and furnishings.

One notable example can be seen at the front of the 500 DK, where a well-designed dual-bench dining area can seamlessly convert into a bedroom. This transformation is made possible by a 160 x 200-cm (63 x 79-in) Murphy bed that folds down from the wooden slat rear wall. Instead of descending on a pedestal, the single-legged table first folds up against the wall to create space for the fold-down bed.

Innovative Loading Solutions in the Yaseo 500 DK

However, there’s more to it. Although the Yaseo 500 DK doesn’t feature the complete loading tailgate found on Knaus’s Deseo series and in sporty caravans produced by competitors, it does provide a spacious front load area that extends directly through the lounge area.

The forward portions of the benches are supported by under-bench drawers that smoothly slide into the wall to create a crosswise passage. External access doors on both sides facilitate the straightforward loading of two e-bikes, which can be securely fastened using integrated tie-down loops, as depicted below:

The smaller Yaseo 340 PX trailer is designed for two sleepers and primarily focuses on the convertible dining lounge, featuring a compact front kitchen unit and a wet bathroom. In contrast, the larger 500 DK model includes an additional rear sofa lounge, offering a separate space for relaxation after meals.

In addition to the impressive front lounge area, the L-shaped rear sofa serves as a single bed and can be optionally converted into a 130 x 200-cm (51 x 79-in) double bed. The end of the sofa is supported by a drawer that slides away to reveal the shower floor.

An expandable accordion wall extends outward to enclose the shower, nearly doubling the bathroom’s size located adjacent to the sofa. Even when the shower wall is folded away, the narrow toilet room remains accessible, ensuring that the toilet can be used when the double bed is set up, covering the shower floor.

For those seeking an additional sleeping spot in the 500 DK layout, there’s an option to install a pull-down bunk bed above the rear lounge area. Initially, it resembles a shelf, but when raised, it includes a security mesh wall to ensure the sleeper, likely a child, stays safely in place and prevents any accidental rolling out.

A Reliable Hub for Meal Preparation

Amidst all the versatile features, the kitchen block serves as a dependable and straightforward centerpiece of the floor plan. Equipped with a dual induction cooktop, a sink, and a 150-liter fridge, it’s consistently prepared for food preparation and cooking, without any intricate folding, sliding, or transforming into other functions.

Knaus further enhances weight efficiency by opting for lighter interior construction materials and by eliminating the LPG infrastructure in favor of an all-electric power system.

In contrast to many other EV-focused trailer manufacturers that rely on large battery packs (adding significant weight), Knaus equips the Yaseo with the capability to connect to any vehicle with V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capabilities, allowing it to power its onboard equipment using the traction battery.

Balancing Battery Use and Optional LPG Integration

Users should exercise caution not to deplete the battery excessively for driving purposes, but they also have the option to connect to a standard campground power source when available. Knaus anticipates a weight reduction of approximately 25 kg (55 lb) by eliminating LPG, but customers who prefer it can choose to have it added as an optional feature.

The Yaseo 340 PX has a starting price of €22,719 (approximately US$24,275) after VAT and is estimated to have a base weight of 1,100 kg (2,425 lb). The larger 500 DK model begins at €29,219 (US$31,225) and is estimated to weigh around 1,400 kg (3,086 lb). These figures can increase substantially when buyers select from various optional features, such as a microwave, lithium battery, smart TV, and sound system.

In the coming month, Knaus will showcase the Yaseo at several major RV exhibitions across Europe, including Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK.
