Mistral Introduces Mistral Code, A New Vibe Coding Client

French AI startup Mistral is launching its own “vibe coding” client called Mistral Code, aiming to compete with established players such as Windsurf, Anysphere’s Cursor, and GitHub Copilot.
Mistral Code, based on the open-source project Continue, is an AI-driven coding assistant that integrates Mistral’s models, an in-IDE assistant, options for local deployment, and enterprise tools into one comprehensive package. A private beta for JetBrains development platforms and Microsoft’s VS Code became available on Wednesday.
“Our aim with Mistral Code is straightforward: to provide enterprise developers with top-tier coding models that support everything from instant code completions to complex multi-step refactoring, all within an integrated platform that can be deployed in the cloud, on dedicated servers, or securely on-premises with air-gapped GPUs,” Mistral explained in a blog post shared with TechCrunch.
AI programming assistants are becoming increasingly popular. Although they still face challenges in producing high-quality code, their potential to enhance coding productivity is driving rapid adoption among companies and developers. A recent survey revealed that 76% of developers used or planned to use AI tools in their development workflows last year.

Mistral Code Driven by Cutting-Edge In-House Models and Used by Leading Companies
According to Mistral, Mistral Code is powered by a suite of in-house models such as Codestral (for code autocomplete), Codestral Embed (for code search and retrieval), Devstral (for “agentic” coding tasks), and Mistral Medium (for chat assistance). The client supports over 80 programming languages and integrates with various third-party plugins. It can also analyze elements like files, terminal outputs, and issues, Mistral says.
Mistral states that several customers, including consulting firm Capgemini, Spanish and Portuguese bank Abanca, and French national railway company SNCF, are already using Mistral Code in production.
“Customers have the ability to fine-tune or further train the underlying models using private repositories or create lightweight distilled versions,” Mistral explains in its blog post. “For IT managers, an advanced admin console provides detailed platform controls, comprehensive monitoring, seat management, and usage analytics.”
Mistral states that it intends to keep enhancing Mistral Code and will contribute at least some of these improvements back to the Continue open-source project.

A Rapidly Growing AI Lab Revolutionizing Chatbots and Enterprise Solutions
Founded in 2023, Mistral is a cutting-edge model lab focused on developing a variety of AI-powered services, including the chatbot platform Le Chat and mobile applications. Supported by investors such as General Catalyst, the company has raised over €1.1 billion (approximately $1.24 billion) so far.
Recently, Mistral introduced the Codestral, Devstral, and Mistral Medium models. At the same time, it launched Le Chat Enterprise, a business-oriented chatbot service featuring tools like an AI agent builder and integration of Mistral’s models with third-party platforms such as Gmail, Google Drive, and SharePoint.
