Prompt Training Helps Users Interact With AI More Naturally

Modern generative AI models are capable of producing everything from images to software applications, but the quality of their results heavily relies on the prompt given by the user.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have introduced a new method to help everyday users learn how to craft effective prompts and enhance their interactions with generative AI models.
This technique, known as Requirement-Oriented Prompt Engineering (ROPE), emphasizes clearly specifying what the AI should accomplish, rather than relying on clever wording or preset templates. As large language models (LLMs) advance, traditional coding skills may become less essential, while proficiency in prompt engineering could become increasingly valuable.
“You have to be able to clearly tell the model what you want—it can’t be expected to infer all your specific needs,” explained Christina Ma, a Ph.D. student at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII). “People often struggle to communicate their intentions to AI effectively, which is why we need to teach prompt engineering skills. ROPE is designed to support that process.”
Mastering the Art of Prompts: How Precision Shapes AI Output
Prompt engineering involves crafting specific instructions—prompts—for a generative AI model to follow in order to produce the desired outcome. The more skilled a user is at creating these prompts, the more accurately the AI can deliver the intended results.
In their paper, “What Should We Engineer in Prompts? Training Humans in Requirement-Driven LLM Use,” published in the Association for Computing Machinery’s Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, the researchers present their ROPE framework and a training module developed to teach and evaluate this approach.
ROPE is a strategy for collaborating with large language models (LLMs) that keeps humans in control by having them define clear requirements for AI prompts. This approach emphasizes the importance of writing precise and thorough instructions, particularly for complex or highly tailored tasks.
Testing ROPE: Comparing Prompt Training Methods Through Hands-On Tasks
To evaluate ROPE, researchers had 30 participants write prompts for an AI to complete two initial tasks: building a tic-tac-toe game and creating a tool to help users generate content outlines. Researchers trained half of the participants using the ROPE method, while they had the other half watch a general YouTube tutorial on prompt engineering. Afterward, researchers asked both groups to write prompts for a different game and chatbot.
The results showed that those trained with ROPE significantly outperformed the YouTube group. Scores improved by 20% for the ROPE group, compared to just a 1% increase for those without the training.
“We didn’t just introduce a new way to teach prompt engineering—we also developed a tool to measure its effectiveness,” said Ken Koedinger, a University Professor at the HCII. “The training results show that ROPE really works.”
How Prompting Is Replacing Traditional Coding
As generative AI continues to evolve, educators are reshaping how they teach programming. Software engineers are increasingly replacing traditional coding with natural language programming, instructing AI through well-crafted prompts rather than writing code manually.
This shift in approach could open up new possibilities for students, enabling them to tackle more advanced development projects earlier in their education and pushing the field forward.
Importantly, the ROPE method wasn’t created exclusively for software engineers. As AI becomes more embedded in everyday life, the ability to communicate clearly with machines is emerging as a key component of digital literacy. With a good understanding of how to write effective prompts—and access to capable AI models—people without programming experience can still build useful applications tailored to their needs.
“Our goal is to give more everyday users the power to build apps and chatbots using LLMs,” said Christina Ma. “If you have an idea and can express the requirements clearly, you can write a prompt that brings that idea to life.”
To support broader adoption, the researchers have open-sourced their training materials, making prompt engineering more approachable for non-experts.
