Rare Rainbow Sea Slug Seen in Falmouth Rock Pool
Vicky Barlow made a remarkable discovery when she came across the rainbow sea slug during her exploration of the pools in Falmouth. This sighting was quite uncommon as these slugs are usually found in warmer waters. Only three prior instances of this creature being observed in the UK have been reported by experts, and this specific sighting in a rockpool is the first of its kind. The initial sighting is believed to have occurred in 2022 near the Isles of Scilly.
Dr. Ben Holt, a marine biologist from the Rock Pool Project, stated that although there have been a few instances where divers and snorkelers have reported seeing this species, this discovery marks the initial occurrence of the species being found by a rock pooler in the UK.
According to him, the rainbow sea slug, scientifically referred to as Babakina anadoni, member of the aeolid nudibranch family. This family is recognized for its striking colors and distinctive shapes. Normally, this slug can be found in the warm seawaters along the western coastline of Spain, Portugal, and France.
