Scientists Found Gratitude May Extend Life

Being thankful for what you have and maintaining a positive outlook could lead to longer life, according to a new study involving nearly 50,000 older nurses in the US.

Researchers from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health conducted the study, suggesting that an attitude of gratitude correlates with increased longevity, particularly in relation to conditions like cardiovascular disease.

While the study doesn’t establish direct cause and effect, it provides empirical evidence on how mental perspectives might influence physical health.

Impact of Gratitude Assessment on Longevity

Participants, averaging 79 years old, completed a gratitude assessment in 2016 as part of a broader project. By 2019, researchers recorded 4,608 deaths, noting that those who scored higher on the gratitude scale exhibited a 9 percent lower likelihood of mortality.

Even after controlling for factors like demographics, health history, and lifestyle, the study identifies various variables, including overlapping attitudes such as optimism, which researchers have also linked to better heart health.

Evaluation of Gratitude’s Impact on Wellbeing

While some researchers caution about weak evidence linking gratitude to improved wellbeing and limited benefits from gratitude interventions for anxiety and depression, deliberate acts of gratitude, such as writing letters of appreciation, have shown benefits for some individuals.

The study suggests that cultivating gratitude through intentional practices might be beneficial.

Looking ahead, the research team aims to explore the connection between gratitude and mortality in a more diverse population.

Beyond its potential to extend life, gratitude is seen as promoting healthy habits and social bonds, both crucial factors in longevity and overall wellbeing.
