UNStudio has unveiled blueprints for constructing the planet’s tallest spokeless Ferris wheel in Seoul, South Korea. This distinctive design will consist of two intersecting rings, with revolving pods providing extraordinary views of the surroundings.

In fact, developed in partnership with Arup and Heerim Architects, the Seoul Twin Eye will be perched atop a 40-meter (131-foot) cultural complex. With a diameter of 180 meters (590 feet), the structure will reach a towering height of 220 meters (656 feet).

Innovative Design of Seoul Twin Eye Ferris Wheel

The Seoul Twin Eye will feature 64 pods, each capable of accommodating up to 25 visitors, resulting in a total capacity of over 1,400 people at once. However, its innovative spokeless design entails a track-based system that moves the pods around the inside and outside of the rings, diverging from the conventional rotation of the entire wheel in a traditional Ferris wheel.

However, “The UNStudio team centered the design concept around unity,” the firm clarified.

In fact, “taking inspiration from the Honcheonsigye, an astronomical clock depicting the celestial object movements over time, the ‘Seoul Twin Eye’ features a dual-ring structure that combines stability with a distinctive aesthetic. The vision proposal, recently unveiled, involved collaboration with Arup, who assessed the earthquake and wind resistance of the proposed structure.”

Integrated Transportation Plans for Seoul Twin Eye

Moreover, the initiative includes proposals for constructing a monorail that links a nearby subway station to the Ferris wheel, along with the addition of a zip line.

The Seoul Twin Eye seems to be a progression from the Seoul Ring project introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government last year. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2025, with anticipated completion in 2028.
