xMEMS Introduces A Sompact Speaker Designed For Smartwatches

xMEMS has launched the Sycamore-W, which it claims to be the “world’s thinnest speaker designed for wrist-worn wearables.” At just 1 mm thick and weighing only 150 mg, the Sycamore-W is about 70% smaller than typical smartwatch speakers. xMEMS adapted the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology used in cell phone microphones to create drivers for earphones. Last year, the company launched the Sycamore speakers, built on the same platform, for open-fit earbuds, smart glasses, and smartwatches.

Although the original Sycamore was compatible with smartwatches, the Sycamore-W was specially designed for wrist-worn devices. Its slim design allows companies to include larger batteries or additional biometric sensors in their products.

Durable, High-Performance Audio for Next-Gen Smartwatches

The speakers are also resistant to water, dust, and shock. “Sycamore-W transforms audio for smartwatches by blending a compact design with strong performance to meet the needs of next-gen wearables,” said Mike Housholder, VP of Marketing and Business Development at xMEMS.

“As the wrist evolves into a central hub for ears-free, hands-free AI interactions, Sycamore-W enables manufacturers to provide high-quality audio in smaller, lighter, and more durable devices.“

The company will begin mass production of the Sycamore-W in the second quarter of 2026, marking the start of a new era for compact audio solutions in wearable tech. As a result, products incorporating this cutting-edge component will not hit the market until later that year.

This timeline reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring quality and innovation, giving manufacturers time to integrate the Sycamore-W into a wide range of devices, from smartwatches to other wrist-worn wearables. While consumers may need to wait a bit longer, the Sycamore-W’s advanced features promise to significantly elevate the audio experience for next-generation wearables.

xMEMS will continue manufacturing the original Sycamore speakers for smart glasses, open-fit earbuds, and laptops, ensuring their ongoing availability for these popular devices.

At the same time, the company plans to introduce new models tailored for more specific applications, expanding its reach into other wearable and tech sectors. These upcoming products aim to address a broader range of user needs, further enhancing the versatility and performance of xMEMS’ audio solutions.
