Blocky Tower Boosts Living Space With Extraordinary Cantilevering Facade

MVRDV
The renowned Dutch architecture firm MVRDV has unveiled plans for a distinctive new residential tower in Taiwan. Named Out of the Box, the building features a striking, block-like design with a cantilevered facade that not only adds outdoor spaces but also expands the interior living areas.
Tower Features and Location
Although the exact height of Out of the Box hasn’t been confirmed, the tower will have 25 floors, reaching approximately 250 feet (76 meters) tall. It will be situated in Taipei’s Tianmu district, the capital city of Taiwan.
Its design, reminiscent of a Jenga tower, is visually impressive and highly functional. The protruding box elements create balconies, terraces, and extra indoor rooms.MVRDV explains that an in-depth study of Taiwanese building codes, which include detailed regulations on outdoor areas, partly inspired the unique form.
Creative Balcony Solutions and Apartment Layouts
“By analyzing and combining these regulations, the design team developed a collection of boxes that provide various balcony types—from simple balconies to combined loggia-balconies and double-height balconies attached to duplex units,” the firm says. “Though the building relies on a limited set of apartment layouts, the addition of these boxes introduces subtle variations across the structure. Digital scripting helped determine the size and positioning of the boxes, factoring in sun exposure to shape the building’s playful look.”
