The recently unveiled Icon electric hydrofoil bears a striking resemblance to a design concept rather than a typical BMW product. However, it is indeed the result of a joint effort between BMW Group Designworks, TYDE (a German boat builder), and Hans Zimmer, the Academy Award-winning composer. While only seen in a movie, this vessel debuts in real life on the waters adjacent to the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

The Icon boasts ample BMW battery capacity, providing a range of up to 50 nautical miles (equivalent to 93 km). It has three hydrofoils, ensuring a silent, efficient, and swift cruising experience. Additionally, the vessel offers an abundance of windows, perfect for onlookers seeking to catch a glimpse of celebrities, akin to the paparazzi’s viewpoint.

The Icon

Although the creators technically refer to this vessel as “THE ICON,” we find the term excessively pretentious and will henceforth refer to it as simply “Icon.” Furthermore, we question whether it truly qualifies as an icon and propose that it is more of a maverick—a design rebel even within the emerging realm of electric hydrofoils, where unconventional aesthetics still dominate.

The Icon’s appearance resembles that of a striking architectural structure on land, incorporating elements inspired by aircraft design rather than a traditional boat. Being the boat’s sizable glasshouse, reminiscent of a prism, positioned between a sturdy hull base and a roof resembling wings, painted in a distinct contrasting green hue. The tall fin at the stern and the similarly angled creased bow create a near-symmetrical framework, effectively containing a noticeable lack of symmetry within.

The captivating design of the Icon goes beyond its outward appearance, as it aims to deliver a unique experience to those on board. The windows not only offer unparalleled panoramic views but also complement the elevated position of the foiling system with downward-facing lower panels. Additionally, the triangular shape widening from the bow to the stern creates a spacious entryway, measuring 14.7 feet (4.5 meters) wide, leading to the rear lounge area entirely enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass.
