ChatGPT and The Dark Web, Yet, A Hushed Talk in The Tech World

ChatGPT and The Dark Web, Yet, A Hushed Talk in The Tech World

The use of ChatGPT provides benefits for businesses, including automation and the potential for increased profits. However, this technology also presents certain risks. One such risk is the possibility of hackers using ChatGPT to manipulate victims, resulting in more advanced and difficult-to-detect cyber attacks.

A recent study by NordVPN has shown an increase in ChatGPT-related discussions on dark web forums from 37 to 91 threads during April. This suggests that exploiting bots has become a popular topic among dark web users. Consequently, there is a potential risk of social engineering attacks, such as phishing, smishing, or pretexting, using ChatGPT technology to facilitate the theft of sensitive information.

The worries revolve around the fact that ChatGPT has the capability to produce realistic conversations or scripts, which could lead to the manipulation of individuals into disclosing sensitive information or carrying out specific actions.

Individuals with criminal intent who utilize the dark web can access knowledge on various subjects related to ChatGPT, such as “Ways to circumvent ChatGPT’s security,” “The development of ChatGPT malware,” and “Utilizing ChatGPT for phishing schemes.”

Leaking sensitive information

Another issue is the security of ChatGPT. In March 2023, a data breach occurred, which resulted in the exposure of users’ personal information, including chat logs and credit card details. This incident highlights the significant privacy risks associated with using the platform. This indicates that any data entered into ChatGPT or similar AI-driven tools for purposes like email writing or marketing is vulnerable to potential leakage.

Prevention is always cheaper than a breach

There are certain guidelines that can be followed to ensure safety and protect businesses from potential threats. They are:

Educate Employees

Sophisticated social engineering attacks require increased attention to employee training, and conducting cyberattack simulation exercises followed by open discussions of the results is one of the most effective ways to achieve this.

Have a Business Resilience Plan

Every company, regardless of its size or industry, must conduct a risk assessment. Once the risks are identified and acknowledged, it is crucial to develop a plan that addresses potential challenges. This includes investing in prevention, detection, and threat mitigation, as well as implementing cybersecurity tools that offer network segmentation, identification, and access management. Additionally, maintaining IDS policies and data integrity checks, conducting clear post-mortem analyses, and establishing backup policies are also essential.

ChatGPT is a helpful technology that enables task automation and boosts productivity. However, since most chatbots are accessible to the public, malicious actors can also exploit this technology to carry out sophisticated attacks that may go undetected by human observation.
