ESCONDIDO – The 3,000-pound plant that was put in on November 16 got a chance to settle in for a few days before anglers got their first chance at them on November 20, so the trout season is now well underway. The public’s response to the novel approaches was mixed, ranging from support from those who saw the benefits to borderline panic from those who were initially causing the problems. Lake staffers revealed new measures in place in the days before the Dixon Lake trout opener in order to enhance the general fishing experience.

The following was the announcement posted on the lake’s official Facebook page:

We have decided to limit boat access to certain locations during trout season in response to the mounting problems at Whisker Bay and the north side of the Buoy Line. This will improve shore fishing opportunities and avoid conflict.

For further information, Western Outdoor News contacted the Dixon Lake ranger crew.

Gregory Gould, supervisor of the City of Escondido Lakes said, “We made this decision based on the amount of citations given and hot spots for complaints over the last two seasons.” He further stated that last year, in order to provide equal opportunities for shore and boat fishers, they had to devote additional staff time and resources to these locations. The restricted regions have a history of brawls, overfishing, and disrespectful behavior. These buoy lines will provide everyone in those places a fair chance to catch fish while allowing them to concentrate on other park-related issues.

Noticeable improvements

The most noticeable improvements are the installation of a new buoy line at Whisker Bay’s mouth, which will prevent rental boats from entering the tiny bay, which frequently housed more than a dozen boats on stock days. In Whisker Bay, it requires not a lot of boats to almost remove all of the fishing options for shore fishermen.

Along with cutting off a small portion of coastline in the same spot, the secondary buoy line that emerges from Dixon’s main buoy line will prevent both rental boats from queuing up and fishing directly on top of trout as soon as they are put into the lake. Freshly planted trout get hammered by the armada of boats and anglers who swarm that shoreline, especially on stock days, before they have an opportunity to disperse to other parts of the lake where fishermen who fish in the weeks after a stock can try to catch them. The number of fishermen who congregate on one bank in the last few years, many of whom are the same people from one stock day to the next, has forced some of them to wade (Dixon is a no-contact reservoir), and some have even had to cut tules to make room for casting.

Anglers Unite for a Promising Trout Season at Dixon Lake

Despite anglers establishing shop all over the lake over the weekend, the fishing was fairly good, and those who are in favor of the modifications (the vast majority) are highly optimistic about the remainder of the trout season at Dixon Lake.

Rob Diehl of Seaspanker Outdoors (YouTube) mentioned that the bite had been fantastic on mini jigs and spoons in the morning, but it died off at about 9. He kept on saying that he had been there when Trout Made’s Mike (Cooper) had been trying out some of his new micro jigs. To start off the morning, Mike had caught 4 trout on his greater natural-looking colors, including a 6-pounder. Meanwhile, he had caught 2 trout of a really excellent size, one on a Trout Made mini-jig and the other with a RHA Spoon. Massive crowds, wall-to-wall fisherman at about every open area on the lake, but it had been still fun and the fishing had been terrific; if the crowds thin down a bit, it should’ve continued to be nice throughout the week.

The lake will be shut between Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 in order to prepare for the Dixon Lake trout derby, which will take place Dec. 3-5. In order to lessen the chaos on stock day, lake personnel also revealed to WON that they intend to just announce the next few weeks with trout stocks rather than the actual day of the deliveries.
