Over the past few years, we’ve seen E Ink’s Kaleido 3 technology featured in a variety of e-readers and e-notes. However, if you assumed that this color ePaper was exclusive to portable devices, think again. E Ink has unveiled its latest innovation: 75-inch outdoor displays.

Collaboration with Key Companies for ISE 2025 Showcase

In collaboration with four companies—Samsung, LG Information Display, DynaScan, and Agile Display Solutions—E Ink presented the Kaleido 3 Outdoor technology at the ISE 2025 showcase.

As more countries work towards reducing their carbon footprint and enhancing sustainability, the advantages of E Ink displays—such as their low energy usage and minimal light pollution—are becoming increasingly significant for both indoor and outdoor digital signage. Dr. F.Y. Gan, President of E Ink, commented, “Our largest E Ink Kaleido display yet offers an impressive solution to meet the demand for dynamic displays while also contributing to environmental efforts.”

The technology in question is Kaleido Outdoor 3, a type of ePaper. It features an RGB color filter array on top of a monochrome E Ink film, producing 4,096 colors and clear, sharp text. As the name indicates, this version is specifically designed for outdoor digital signage and can function in temperatures ranging from -15°C to 65°C (5°F to 149°F).

Eco-friendly and Low Power Consumption for Solar-Powered Signage

The panel boasts a 75-inch diagonal display and, like other E Ink products, only requires power when the image is refreshed. E Ink suggests that this technology could enable signage, such as those found at bus stops, to operate on solar power—offering an eco-friendly alternative to energy-hungry digital signs. Additionally, this ePaper technology is gentle on the eyes and doesn’t contribute to light pollution (unless additional lighting is used). It’s the first display technology to be certified by the International Dark-Sky Association.

Samsung’s version of color ePaper is available in sizes ranging from 13 inches (1,600 x 1,200 pixels) to 75 inches (5,120 x 2,880 pixels). The package includes a 5,000-mAh battery, USB-C ports, 8 GB of storage, and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. A dedicated mobile app allows for remote management, while a special algorithm optimizes the visibility of content.

DynaScan Integrates Kaleido Outdoor 3 for Enhanced Digital Signage

Though details about LG’s version remain scarce, DynaScan has incorporated the Kaleido Outdoor 3 technology into its DK Series Kiosks, which are also available with LED, LCD, and lightbox options. The company describes the solution as combining “exceptional energy efficiency with impressive image quality, revolutionizing outdoor digital signage with its unique size and performance.”

Agile also emphasizes the energy efficiency of this technology, promoting it as “a sustainable and city-friendly alternative to traditional outdoor displays, consuming only one-tenth the power of LCD or LED screens.”
