Facebook announced on Wednesday that it is rolling out passkey support for both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to log in more securely and easily without relying on traditional passwords.

Facebook Embraces Passwordless Login as Part of Industry-Wide Shift

This move is part of a broader industry shift toward passwordless authentication, which uses biometric data like a fingerprint or facial recognition—or a device PIN—to verify identity. With this update, Facebook users can now create and manage passkeys through the Accounts Center in the app’s settings, streamlining the login process across devices while reducing the risk of phishing attacks and account breaches.

Passkeys offer stronger protection against remote account breaches by requiring physical access to your device. Instead of traditional passwords, they rely on Face ID, Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security key to verify your identity.

Passkeys eliminate the need for usernames and passwords, which are vulnerable to phishing and other security risks.

Single Passkey Support Coming to Messenger for Seamless Cross-Platform Login

Facebook says passkeys will expand to Messenger in the coming months, allowing users to use a single passkey for both platforms.

The company also notes that passkeys can autofill payment details when making purchases with Meta Pay.

To set up a passkey, go to the new “passkey” option in the Accounts Center under Facebook’s Settings menu. After setup, you can begin logging into Facebook on your phone using the passkey. Other login methods, like your password, will remain available so you can still access your account on devices that don’t support passkeys.

Facebook joins a growing list of tech companies that have added passkey support over the past year. Other major players include Apple, Microsoft, AmazonGooglePayPalTikTokWhatsApp, X, and GitHub.
