Intel Plans to Cut up to 20% of its Workforce in the Intel Foundry Division

According to an internal memo first reported by The Oregonian, the semiconductor giant intends to reduce its Intel Foundry workforce by 15% to 20% starting in July. Intel Foundry is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and packaging semiconductors for external customers.

Unclear Impact Amid Large Workforce

It’s uncertain how many employees will be directly affected. As of December 2024, Intel reported a total workforce of 108,900 in its annual regulatory filing.

TechCrunch contacted Intel to request additional details.

This development isn’t entirely unexpected. Since CEO Lip-Bu Tan assumed leadership in March, he has repeatedly emphasized the need for Intel to streamline its organizational structure, prioritize its core business areas, and reestablish itself as an engineering-driven company. Speculation about these particular layoffs began circulating in April.

At the Intel Vision conference in March, Tan also informed customers that the company planned to divest its noncore business units.

Last August, Intel cut approximately 15% of its workforce, affecting around 15,000 employees.
