Magmo Pro Attaches to iPhones, Enabling Automatic Recording of Phone Conversations
Despite the iPhone’s versatile capabilities, it lacks the ability to perform a seemingly straightforward function: recording phone conversations. However, the Magmo Pro offers iPhone users a straightforward solution, allowing them to effortlessly record phone calls without the need for complex procedures.
Magmo Pro
The Magmo Pro, developed by Korean company Mune, is presently the focus of a Kickstarter campaign. Serving as the successor to the previously crowdfunded Magmo, this device operates in a similar fashion while incorporating several notable enhancements.
Similar to its predecessor, the Magmo Pro is a slim, slab-shaped device that effortlessly attaches to the back of an iPhone 12 or newer models, utilizing the magnetic ring found in the phone’s MagSafe area. The recording process begins with a simple flick of its sole physical switch. The device employs a piezoelectric element to capture the vibrations emanating from the phone’s speaker, enabling it to record the voices of all individuals engaged in the conversation. This innovative method allows the Magmo Pro to effectively capture both sides of the dialogue.
In contrast to the original version, which required manual uploading of recordings from its internal storage to a connected phone or computer for review, the Magmo Pro offers a seamless wireless solution. Recordings are instantly transmitted to an accompanying app on the iPhone, eliminating the need for additional steps. Furthermore, all recordings are equipped with time and date stamps, facilitating easy reference in the future.
Enhanced Noise Cancellation and Extended Battery Life
Moreover, the Magmo Pro incorporates strategically positioned MEMS microphones to effectively identify and eliminate background noise originating from the user’s side of the conversation. It is equipped with an upgraded lithium battery with a higher capacity of 500 mAh, surpassing the original version’s 280 mAh. While an exact runtime figure has not been provided, the original model reportedly offers a runtime of seven hours per 90-minute charge.
A notable addition to the Pro is its automatic recording feature, which initiates the recording process whenever a call is received. This ensures that users do not miss capturing any unexpectedly important information.
However, this feature raises concerns regarding privacy and legality. According to a Mune representative, in most regions, recording conversations without informing the other party is often legally permissible if you are one of the participants. Nonetheless, out of courtesy, it is advisable to inform the other party about the recording.
Assuming the Magmo Pro successfully enters production, backers can secure one through a pledge of US$109, while the planned retail price is set at $169. The device’s functionality is demonstrated in the accompanying video.
