Meta Was Seen Experimenting with AI-Generated Comments on Instagram

In recent years, Meta has integrated numerous AI-driven features into its apps, including experiments with AI-generated characters that had unique profiles and personalities. However, these were ultimately abandoned after being deemed unsettling and unnecessary.

Now, in a move that may also face user resistance, Meta is exploring AI-assisted interactions by helping users write comments on Instagram.

Meta AI’s Comment Suggestions Feature Spotted in Testing

Social media feature tester Jonah Manzano recently discovered a “Write with Meta AI” prompt on Instagram, which offers AI-generated comment suggestions for posts. According to a video posted by Manzano, users who have access to this feature will see a pencil icon next to the comment bar. Tapping it activates Meta AI, which analyzes the photo and generates three suggested comments.

For instance, if a post features someone smiling and giving a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments like “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” Users can refresh to see additional options if they’re not satisfied with the initial suggestions.

Meta Expands AI Integration Across Its Platforms

A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch via email, “We frequently test new ways for users to interact with Meta AI across our apps. Beyond DMs, Meta AI is available in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to enhance user experiences and make them more engaging.”

While Meta did not disclose details about the availability of this test feature, the company confirmed that it had previously experimented with AI-generated comments on Facebook last year.

The new feature may not sit well with users who prefer to keep Instagram’s comments free of AI, especially those who value authentic interactions over automated responses. Many long for the platform’s earlier days, when it felt more genuine and less performance-driven, making AI-generated comments seem unnecessary and inauthentic.

As with any test feature, it remains unclear if or when Meta intends to expand its rollout.

Notably, Meta has previously explored AI-driven comment features, having tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook last year.
